Faith groups lay out Thanksgiving feast for ‘Occupy’ protesters

By Agence France-Presse
Wednesday, November 23, 2011

WASHINGTON — Protesters from Washington’s two Occupy Wall Street offshoots flocked Wednesday to a church where Abraham Lincoln once worshipped for a Thanksgiving buffet and some robust words of support.

The New York Avenue Presbyterian Church threw open its basement and laid out a spread of turkey, mashed potatoes, corn and pumpkin pie, plus kosher and vegan options, for the afternoon, with enough on hand to feed 500.

Organizing the feast was Occupy Faith DC, an inter-faith coalition set up a month ago to give food, equipment and spiritual support to Occupy DC in McPherson Square and Occupy Washington DC in Freedom Plaza.

“We understand and we are in total solidarity with you,” James Lee of Occupy Faith DC and the Network of Spiritual Progressives, a faith-based social justice movement, told the diners.

1. I bet the MSM won't be able to find this story.
The owners won't allow it.

19. I bet a lot of DU'ers won't either. The contempt some people have for ANY Church is sad.

Been doing it for years and it's still hard for a lot of folks to hear. The worst is when you have facts to back up your argument and they still think your full of shit. I guess pounding in "Cause and Effect" is still a challenge for many.

7. Great news
I am sure that they could have used it as well. Although personally I don't like celebrating Thanksgiving, I would have been "thankful" for the meal.

11. I heartily recommend gratitude, even if you fast on Thanksgiving and are an atheist.
For one thing, I'm grateful for a four day weekend!

Gratitude is one of my favorite feelings and coping mechanisms.

For example, when I have had a bad experience, I can process it and move forward from it positively by finding something in it for which I can be genuinely grateful.

In fact, as I type, I'm realizing how very grateful I am for feelings of gratitude.

Blessings.

8. I actually have a problem with this
Feeding people who choose to protest diverts resources away from people who do not choose to be homeless and hungry. Nice gesture, but let's help those that need it most.

12. Those choosing to protest in this protest ARE helping the homeless and hungry,
perhaps more than anything else since Carter was President.

(but only if we support them.)

Why do you think faith-based are feeding them?

13. That same church hosts one of the largest holiday meals for
the homeless, too. It isn't like they cancelled their regular feeding program to offer the Occupt meal.

By the way, I'm a strong atheist, who is on the e-mailing list of the Network of Spiritual Progressives. I may not share their faith, but I enthusiastically support their progressive activism.
