A judge in India has sentenced eight men to death and 20 others to life imprisonment for three so-called honour killings that took place in 1991.

The men were found guilty of murdering a Dalit boy and a girl from a higher caste who had eloped together, as well as the boy's cousin.

All three were set alight and hanged, the court in Uttar Pradesh state heard.

According to one recent study, hundreds of people are killed each year for falling in love or marrying outside their caste or against their families' wishes.

Edited to add a warning that the penultimate paragraph in the main BBC article has even more graphic descriptions of what happened.

1. they need to stop with the word HONOR
there's no honor involved in these killings - just religious nuttery and cowardice

6. There is no mention of religion in the article.
However, it does state that "Age-old notions of tradition and family honour are still deeply entrenched in many parts of Indian society." and "Often "honour" crimes are endorsed, or even encouraged, by village-based caste councils or panchayats."

This is about barbaric traditions/culture, not "religious nuttery".

9. Shades of Touchstone. They never had any:
TOUCHSTONE
By my knavery, if I had it, then I were; but if you
swear by that that is not, you are not forsworn: no
more was this knight swearing by his honour, for he
never had any; or if he had, he had sworn it away
before ever he saw those pancakes or that mustard.

4. I can't speak with any real authority, but in a nation of a billion people...
It doesn't much surprise me that it might take twenty years to process a case with so many defendants...I don't know for sure if that's the cause or not though. I know almost nothing about the judicial system of India, except that it's rather different from ours.
