Hillary Clinton calls for ‘AIDS-free generation’
Source: Wash. Post

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Tuesday called on the world to create the first “AIDS-free generation” by using antiviral drugs, condoms, circumcision and other approaches to stem the spread of HIV.

In a highly promoted speech at the National Institutes of Health, Clinton said scientific advances led by the United States have provided the tools to minimize the spread of the deadly virus.

“We have a chance to give countless lives and futures to millions of people who are alive today but equally, if not profoundly more importantly, to an entire new generation yet to be born,” Clinton said.

“The goal of an AIDS-free generation is ambitious, but it is possible,” she said. “An AIDS-free generation would be one of the greatest gifts the United States could give to our collective future.”

1. Is it realistic, or just good intentions?
Wishful thinking?

What about a Single Payer Healthcare system first?

CARE and preventive measures because they are POOR.

But, hey, let's pay multinationals their profits and bonuses for antivirals and condoms for POOR folks... abroad!

Brilliant, isn't it? What is wrong with these people?

And what about the AIDS victims IN the U.S.? They're on their own?

6. Good intentions
Single-Payer would be great to have in the U.S.

I'm not sure what it would do to halt HIV / AIDS in eastern Africa, where rape seems to be the normal interaction between villagers and militia. I doubt if the teenaged militia will be very interested in a box of condoms prior to rape, pillage, etc.

If her stated goal is to eradicate HIV world-wide, I'd guess it's wishful thinking. Maybe she should start small, like eradicating malaria.

4. The only way to do this is national health care, and mandatory testing
followed up by 'HIV' colonies. Without a vaccine it will never be wiped out.

7. We could outlaw fucking. That might work ...
... at least as well as prohibition.

Don't forget that Clinton is, at her heart, a neo-liberal.

8. mandatory testing and HIV colonies
In other words, every fear people with HIV have had since the 80's about the worst possible way they could be treated.

Think before you post shit like that.

5. "Clinton Advocates Forced Circumcision Worldwide". DU melts
I'm not sure about circumcision as a method to prevent HIV infection. I am sure that circumcision can occasionally attract comments on DU.
