Syria unrest: Tanks 'open fire' in Homs

Tanks mounted with machine-guns have opened fire in the Syrian city of Homs, activists have reported.

It comes a day after authorities in Damascus agreed to an Arab League plan calling on the government to pull the military out of cities.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Baba Amr district of Homs came under heavy fire on Thursday. Unconfirmed reports say at least three people were killed in the city.

On Wednesday, the Arab League said Syria had agreed to its proposals to end the violence. The plan requires Syria to withdraw all troops from cities and an immediate cessation to all killing.

Aljazeera: Syria 'violence defies peace deal'

http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2011/11/20...

At least four people have been reportedly killed by Syrian security forces bombarding residential areas with tanks in the flashpoint city of Homs, a day after the Syrian government approved an Arab League plan to completely halt its violent crackdown.

On Wednesday, Damascus had agreed to several measures, including the removal of a military presence from cities and residential areas ... Syria also agreed to release all political prisoners and allow the Arab League and foreign media to monitor and report on the situation.

Members of the Syrian National Council (SNC), an opposition group, have voiced serious scepticism over Syria's implementation of the peace deal.

Najib al-Ghadban, a member of the SNC, said implementation of the initiative would mean the end of the regime and Assad was not likely to let that happen. "What happened today is an attempt to buy more time," Ghadban told reporters on Wednesday. "This regime is notorious for maneuvering and for giving promises and not implementing any of them."

1. Let's see how this plays out, although I have seen the movie before
DAMASCUS, Nov. 3 (Xinhua) -- Scores of Syrians were killed Wednesday in the central province of Homs by unknown armed groups, the private-al-Watan newspaper said Thursday.

The unrest-torn city has witnessed a flare-up of violence since Tuesday ahead of an Arab League ministerial committee's scheduled meeting with a Syrian delegation to discuss ways of putting in force an AL peace plan to defuse tension in the country.

Al-Watan said 11 men aboard a minibus were killed in Homs suburbs, adding that gunmen stormed a tissue factory near Kafarlaha village in Homs and opened fire at workers, killing the owner of the factory and nine workers.

And 13 army members and security agents were killed, seven of them at Bab Amro and two at al-Hashish market, it added.

2. But in response to the Arab League plea, the tank's fire was peaceful and nonviolent.
