(Calif.) Democratic Assemblywoman Cathleen Galgiani says she is gay
Source: Sacramento Bee

Democratic Assemblywoman Cathleen Galgiani has publicly come out as a lesbian.

In an interview, the 47-year-old Livingtson Democrat told the Stockton Record that it was not until after her 2006 election to the Assembly that she knew she was gay.

Galgiani told the newspaper that she hoped talking about her life would provide support for youth dealing with issues related to their own sexual identity.

... Galgiani's announcement brings the total number of openly gay state lawmakers to eight. Her addition would make the Legislature's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Caucus, formed in 2002, the country's largest caucus recognizing openly gay legislators in the country, according to the gay rights advocacy group Equality California.

5. I was just thinking that. No more or less than Assembly woman decides
to go blonde. It will happen eventually.

Why should this even be news? Oh, yeah because we have the repressive RW to thank for this.

16. Think your question presumes equal footing for homsexuals, whereas we really don't

have that -- even at this moment --

Notice that she discusses homosexuals contemplating suicide -- and her

concern for youth.

Do you think any heterosexual has ever had those concerns for heterosexual youth?

When everything that a child is taught from its earliest years is based on hetereosexuality --

what they see every day on TV and in life -- the way things are discussed -- then it puts one

at odds with their own inner feelings. What happens to self-worth, self-esteem, confidence?

Perhaps it becomes easier to live in denial than to become an outsider in society?

But certainly even if this woman had strong inclinations to homosexuality, isn't society

still telling her that it is preferential to be hetereosexual?

Happily our military is now moving on -- they say that an army which "loves" one another is

the hardest to beat!

"Miss your voice, the touch of your hand ---

Oh, I long to know that you understand ----

My Buddy, My Buddy -- Your Buddy Misses you -- "

:)

17. 45 years, in my case.
I know that it sounds strange. I was very surprised myself! I've learned that this is not uncommon among women. A lot of us grow up trying to do what society expects of us, more or less. The script is to grow up, find a nice man, get married, have kids. This expectation is ingrained in a lot of little girls from a very young age. In contrast, lesbians have been portrayed until very recently mostly in a completely negative light. Extreme stereotypes, etc. Ever since I can remember I liked to dress up, wear pretty clothes, I played with dolls, etc. There simply was no model for me to understand that I was gay. I knew gay men, but no openly gay women.

I agree completely with this politician. She's recognized that it is important to come out as an example to youth. I am out at work, everywhere. If just one little girl recognizes that she is gay and doesn't have to spend decades wandering around in the dark, then that is one less life filled with confusion and missed opportunities.
