State firm's cash to Herman Cain may breach federal campaign, tax laws
Edited on Mon Oct-31-11 10:36 AM by NRaleighLiberal
Source: WSJ

"Herman Cain's two top campaign aides ran a private Wisconsin-based corporation that helped the GOP presidential candidate get his fledgling campaign off the ground by originally footing the bill for tens of thousands of dollars in expenses for such items as iPads, chartered flights and travel to Iowa and Las Vegas - something that might breach federal tax and campaign law, according to sources and documents.

Internal financial records obtained by No Quarter show that Prosperity USA said it was owed about $40,000 by the Cain campaign for a variety of items in February and March. Cain began taking donations for his presidential bid on Jan. 1.

Prosperity USA was owned and run by Wisconsin political operatives Mark Block and Linda Hansen, Cain's current chief of staff and deputy chief of staff, respectively.

The authenticity of the records was verified by two individuals close to the firm."

"Long before Herman Cain chief of staff Mark Block was appearing in the most mocked campaign ad of the presidential campaign so far, he and deputy chief of staff Linda Hansen started a Wisconsin corporation that the Journal Sentinel reports illegally helped the GOP presidential candidate get his campaign off the ground.

According to sources and documents obtained by the newspaper, Prosperity USA, founded by Block and Hansen, footed the bill for tens of thousands of dollars in expenses for such items as iPads, chartered flights and travel to Iowa and Las Vegas - something that might breach federal tax and campaign law. Daniel Bice reports:

It is not known if Cains election fund eventually paid back Prosperity USA, which now appears defunct. The candidates federal election filings make no mention of the debt, and the figures in the documents dont match payments made by the candidates campaign.
In addition to picking up these expenses at least initially, Prosperity USA also paid as much as $100,000 to the Congress of Racial Equality, a conservative black organization, shortly before Cain was a featured speaker at the groups annual Martin Luther King Jr. dinner in mid-January."

3. So, this "tax-exempt nonprofit" is founded, loans Cain thousands, gives another group

100K just before Cain gives a speech to them and then closes. This information has been around for a while. Maybe the sexual harassment story will gin up some new interest in this one too. It's about the clearest case of money-laundering I've ever heard of.

6. I know Rove hates Perry, but I would have thought that Cain was just the kind of
incurious and easily-manipulated politician that Rove likes. And yet, Rove came out today slamming Cain for his non-answer answer on the sexual harassment charges.

Guess Rove is a Romney man?

I sure would love to know which candidate's campaign is releasing all this oppo research. Maybe it's more than one?

7. That might explain the non-stop
barrage of "I'm a Mormon" advertisements that I've been seeing on local TV channels. Are they all over cable too?

9. I'm TV-free, but they have been popping up on Hulu like weeds.
They are running neck-and-neck with Geico ads for frequency and I don't really watch all that much on Hulu, so regular "viewers" must be getting bombed w/them.

Never thought about the Mittens connection. Good catch!

11. Think of how much money
it takes for a continuous ad campaign like that (the Mormon ads). They're slickly produced and everywhere. Constant. Why would the Church of Latter Day Saints all of a sudden start running tons of ads? They wouldn't. It's all about what many consider Romney's weak point and generating positive positive "Mormon" talking points BEFORE the handlers allow it to really become an issue in the M$M. Just my two cents, but I had a strange feeling when I saw three of those ads within 20 minutes.

8. That may be true
but I believe Rove is smart enough to know Cain doesn't have a chance against Obama. Rove likes sex scandals whether true or false - think McCain South Carolina year 2000 when he was ahead in the polls.
