9. "You can still protest, but I get to set the hours."

Suggestion Mayor: Don't talk to the protesters until you've finished the investigation and those responsible have been punished. Investigation doesn't mean squat. Felonies were committed by police. There's incontrovertible proof of that. Everyone, but everyone in the world knows it. And the ones who ordered it and those who carried it out had better be punished, at least with suspensions without pay until they are tried.

I'm sympathize for your budget crisis, but where did your police department find the funds to do this when it can no longer answer routine calls?

12. Pretty good memo, if you just take out the two lines
fourth and third from the end. With those two in there it is pure unadulterated bullshit of the particularly runny, smelly kind.

Politicians need to start asking us what we want them to do, instead of telling us what they want us to do.

13. We need to learn from this FAST.
These are protests that started with the intent of being peaceful and Mayors felt free to treat the protestors as though they were marauding thugs. Organized crime does not get treated as badly.

Billy Bulger, a former crime boss (and former FBI informer--Think Ben Affleck's The Town) who was Public Enemy No. 1 for many before Bin Laden and after Obama Bin Laden, um, passed away, is in prison, reading books and awaiting trial, not in a hospital in a coma.

If any of us did something more obstreperous than hold up signs and pitch tents, would we be mowed down like the lawn of a mansion?

I am very sad that she is the first female Asian Mayor in America, but we CANNOT let this go.

She needs to be made an example of until she steps down.

Then, we need to think about how we are going to have some say in the behavior of Mayors, police, the National Guard and the military, not to mention the mercenaries. They are armed and most of us are not. We have no chance.

Wake up, Americans.

No more Kent State. No more Oakland.

I know it's scary, but we have to think about how this goes forward. Oakland set a dangerous precedent, and every minute our Pres remains silent on it ...i :scared:

I don't know what the next step is, honestly, but we can NOT back down. I will participate in a gen strike if needs be...even if I am not in O-town and not working full-time ;)

33. You've made some good points, No Elephant, but,
One also has to place the blame for the Oakland situation, as well as similar situations that have arisen throughout the United States since the OWS/Occupation Movement(s) began:

Sure, Police Departments and City Mayors do bear responsibility for abusing their power and running roughshod over people who're exercising their Constitutional rights to protest, but one also has to place the blame squarely on the United States government in Washington for creating the kind of atmosphere that makes this kind of abuse of power by city mayors and police departments throughout the United States possible.

19. The problem is the media controls the message including the clear channel radio chain.
Have you heard the songs from the last Eagles album?

The Eagles Lyrics - Business as usual
album: The Long Road Out Of Eden (2007)
genre:

Artist: Eagles
Title: Business as usual
-----------------------

Look at the weather, look at the news
Look at all the people in denial
We're burning time, bleeding grace
Still we worship at the marketplace
While common sense is goin' out of style
I thought that I would be above it all by now
In some country garden in the shade

But it's business as usual
Day after day
Business as usual
Just grinding away
You try to be righteous
You try to do good
But business as usual
Turn your heart into wood

Monuments to arrogance reach for the sky
Our better natures buried in the rubble
We got the prettiest White House that money can buy
Sitting up there in that beltway bubble
And when "El Jefe" talks about our freedom
But this is what he really means...

Business as usual
How dirty we play
Business as usual
Don't you get in the way
Yeah, makes you feel helpless
Makes you feel like a clown
Business as usual
Is breakin' me down

Boy, you can't go surfing in Century City
Yeah, them sharks out there are lurking beneath the curl
Yeah, they rob you blind, chew you up, and it ain't pretty
And it's a soul suckin', soul suckin', soul suckin', soul suckin'
Soul suckin', soul suckin' world

Business as usual
Day after day
Business as usual
Feel like walking away
A barrell of monkeys
Or band of renown
Business as usual
Is breakin' me down
Breakin' me down

Bet you never heard that on the radio!

How about this one

The Eagles Lyrics - Frail Grasp On The Big Picture
album: The Long Road Out Of Eden (2007)
genre:

Artist: Eagles
Title: Frail Grasp On The Big Picture
---------------------

Well, ain't it a shame
That our short little memories
Never seem to learn
The message of history
We keep makin' the same mistakes
Over and over and over and over again
And then we wonder why
We're in the shape we're in

Good ol' boys down at the bar
Peanuts and politics
They think they know it all
They don't know much of nothing
Even if one of them was to read the newspaper
Cover-to-cover
That ain't what's going on
Journalism's dead and gone

Frail grasp on the big picture
Light fading and the fog is getting thicker
It's a frail grasp on the big picture
Dark ages

You my love-drunk friend
All that red wine and candlelight
Soulful conversations
That go on until the dawn
How many times can you tell your story?
How many hangovers can you endure
Just to get some snogging done?
You're living in a hollow dream
You don't have the slightest notion
What long-term love is all about
All your romantic liasons
Don't deal with eternal questions like
Who left the cap off the freaking toothpaste?
Whose turn to take the garbage out?

Frail grasp on the big picture
You keep on rubbin' that, you're gonna get a blister
It's a frail grasp on the big picture
I've seen it all before

And we pray to our Lord
Who we know is American
He reigns from on high
He speaks to us through middlemen
And he shepherds his flock
We sing out and we praise His name
He supports us in war
He presides over football games
And the right will prevail
All our troubles shall be resolved
We have faith in the Lord
Unless there's money or sex involved

Frail grasp on the big picture
Nobody's calling them for roughing up the kicker
It's a frail grasp on the big picture
Heaven help us

Frail grasp on the big picture
All waiting for that miracle elixir
Frail grasp on the big picture
I don't wonder anymore

Frail grasp on the big picture
Somebody says, "You brought her here
so go ahead and kiss her
Frail grasp on the big picture

Frail grasp on the big picture
Light fading and the fog is getting thicker
It's a frail grasp on the big picture

Frail grasp on the big picture
Frail grasp on the big picture

34. I remember Neil Young's song, "Ohio".
I also remember the events that made this song possible quite well. It was an intense time, and "Ohio" was an intense song that told the story quite well. I later learned some other facts about that sad, scary event that I hadn't known before; First of all, most of the people who were killed and/or wounded by the National Guards' inappropriate use of force in this instance were not even participating in the protest, but were on their way to and/or from classes at Kent State University. Secondly (and not that this excuses what the National guard did at Kent State that year), many, if not most of the National Guard guys were also young adults who were about the same age as the kids attending Kent State University, as well as the kids who were staging a protest that day on campus about Nixon's escalation of our Indo-China conflict into Cambodia. That not withstanding, however, the Ohio National Guard had previously been deployed to Cleveland to control a very tense and bloody labor strike that had taken place there, and were then re-deployed to Kent State University to supposedly keep things under control there! Sending a bunch of exhausted, inexperienced and poorly-trained National Guardsmen who were also just kids to Kent State University campus to supposedly control peaceful anti-war protesters had some rather disastrous results, which, unfortunately, never fail to repeat themselves throughout the United States and the world, even today, as even more recent events indicate.

A long time civil rights activist and union organizer?Sure forgot her roots didn't she? What an embarrassment to civil rights activists everywhere, and Union Organizers as well.

Free speech activities between 6am and 10pm? This gal needs to be run out of office pronto!

Somebody really needs to investigate a ballot measure that would target funding of the police dept, and perhaps even specifically target SWAT.A reduction in funding of a significant amount might remind them of who they work for. After all, they are employees.

Gut their budget and hear them bellow.

And he was all like, "I will open the doors of Government and ask you to be involved in your own Democracy again", that is..until the topic of Cannabis legalization came up...

Oh! And I'm sure Scott Olsen's family feel much better now that she's visited them in the hospital acting all concerned. I wonder, does she even feel the least bit personally accountable for what happened on her watch and with her blessing?

Edited on Fri Oct-28-11 06:00 AM by Scuba
1. She should have showed up in person, regardless.

2. She asks the protesters to be non-violent, without acknowledging that they have been all along. No mention of rubber bullets.

3. She orders a police presence. Why? The police were the problem.

4. She implies the protesters have not been keeping conditions "healthy". What evidence suggests this is necessary?

5. She limits free speech to hours convenient for her. Bullshit.

She apparently has a great history of activism, and that may earn her a pass on SOME of what happened, but this statement sure doesn't flip my flapjacks.

29. that last line "We must Unite and not Divide our city"
tear gas is statistically proven to be one of the great uniter's available. Also spending what 100,000 on a raid of unarmed peaceful protesters is also a known way to unite the people.

The new tactic we will be seeing more of is "look how much they are costing us" in an effort to turn public opinion.
