BP wins approval to resume drilling in Gulf of Mexico
Source: BBC News

BP has won approval to resume drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, 18 months after a well blowout killed 11 workers and caused an environmental disaster.

Regulators approved plans for drilling to depths of up to 6,000ft about 200 miles off the coast of New Orleans.

US officials said in a statement: "Our review of BP's plan included verification of BP's compliance with the heightened standards."

13. Another Friday news dump
Either the news media is slow and is just getting around this week to reporting this on a Friday -- the best day of the week to dump controversial news because the dumpers don't have to face full scrutiny and have a full weekend for the news to die down -- or the O'ministration is spineless and doesn't want to face the scrutiny from the f*ing retarded base that he'd face during a Monday through Thursday news dump. Very disappointing.

14. Here we go again.
Drill...Destroy...Deny...repeat ad nauseum.

Maybe they (BP & our government) figure that the Gulf is still so blanked up that people won't notice fresh destruction????

24. Also: Better written, more comprehensive article.
In the days after the BP oil spill, some analysts questioned BP's future in the U.S. offshore drilling arena.

But the government has stressed that BP will go through the same review process as any other company. Last week, a drilling official said BP will not be barred from participating in an upcoming offshore oil and gas lease sale.

Congressman Edward Markey, a vocal critic of BP in the aftermath of the spill, said the government may be welcoming the company back to the Gulf too soon.

"Comprehensive safety legislation hasn't passed Congress, and BP hasn't paid the fines they owe for their spill, yet BP is being given back the keys to drill in the Gulf," Markey, the top Democrat on the House Natural Resources committee, said in a statement.
