Audience Members At Fox News (Republican) Debate Boo Gay Solider
Source: Talking Points Memo

ORLANDO, FL — Members of the crowd gathered for the Fox News/YouTube debate booed a video of a gay solider in Iraq who asked if the nine presidential candidates on stage would work to “circumvent” the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.

Watch it:

2. O.M.G.!!!
it was only one or two men booing, but it was done loudly!!

Did you notice the look on his face? I'm not sure if that was for the soldier or the question, and, of course, it cut off before he answered.

39. I was watching too and was shocked.
Then that mealy fuckstick Santorum actually followed it with 'yes I would reinstate DADT!'
The fact is, that man was BOOING AN AMERICAN SOLDIER. Jesus, what if some poor guy loudly booed a soldier who was speaking at a teabagger rally? answer: he'd be dead by now.

48. I didn't watch the debate
I just saw this clip in the OP. I didn't know how that fu***er answered. Thank you for filling that in for me. I'm sure that, given the right opportunity, he and the others would go back to what was in place BEFORE DADT, and once again make it illegal for LGBT to serve, and legal for military commanders to question any service member's sexuality, and to issue a dishonorable discharge, with possible prosecution if the person was outed.

It is very scary to think about any one of those people becoming president.

The GOP, but conservatives and conservatism in general. Want to get a real blank stare with lots of stuttering and stammering? Ask a conservative that question;what has your ideology done for the country? You can make it open-ended time wise not just the past 30 years. My experience with that question has been most interesting.

29. Yes they are getting braver
and more outspoken. I blame the MSM for giving them so much attention regardless of their small numbers and outrageous ideas. I get the feeling that at some point they realized that they could get away with being bigoted and/or racist and not only were there no repercussions, they were rewarded with attention on a national level.

Just like young children who do not suffer repercussions for their behavior, these people will get bolder and louder and potentially destructive.

We've had over twenty years of hate media. It is the corporations in the media business who have aided in the creation of the very dividing atmosphere today. So, who benefits?

Amazing how much damage such a small group of people can do in such a short time.

Back in the nineties, these same people were watching Jerry Springer. FOX News became their new reality TV and they actually got off their couches and went to the polls. I am always hopeful that their attention span is short and they'll find "Dancing With the Stars" more interesting than politics. I really don't think most of them can sustain this level of involvement for very long.

This reminded me of an event I attended about eight years ago here in Portland, a debate sponsored by a radio station featuring a local conservative, Lars Larson, plus Bill O'Reilly, and two Oregon politicians (both democrats). One of the politicians was James Weaver, a World War II veteran. Of course he was ridiculed and booed loudly by the crowd for his views, with no respect shown for the fact that he was a VETERAN. Of WWII. You know, that whole Greatest Generation. At the end of the evening, I tracked him down to thank him for his service. He was in good spirits and it didn't seem like the negativity of the crowd had bothered him much. Most everyone else was busy getting Bill O'Reilly's autograph.

It amused me somewhat that, of the four people taking part in this debate, the only two with military service were the democrats.

have some wealthy arsehole fund the lies, with a complicit media salivating to allow them on 24/7 and basically disregard those who actually fought along side Kerry. The tea party to me shows no patriotism, especially when they deride those who actually have seen battle. Waving a "made in china" flag on your car or displaying a yellow ribbon does not make a patriot. I remember the obscene purple band aids, while their little boots who spent more time partying, had never ever seen the horrors of war lied us into war and five deferment cheney who had better things to do than serve his country. And they have the audacity to call themselves some kind of patriots.

Jessica Lynch did not want to be used as a propaganda tool for little boots and his chickenhawks, when she spoke the truth, she was attacked by some of these same so called patriots. Attacked for telling the truth. Max Cleland served his country, and look what they did to him?

I see a bunch of tools for the global corporations and the wealthy-I do not see patriots who care about the disintegration of our infrastructure or care about their fellow americans.

I do hate hearing that the Portland crowd booed James Weaver. Figured it would be more likely that would happen over here east of the Cascades. Of course, there is only one progressive station in town, KPOJ, which I stream online every day. Local stations in these parts are "proud" to carry Lars, Hannity, O'Reilly, etc. I know this not because I listen but because their visages are on huge billboards in Bend.

Weaver was one of the good ones, ethics charges aside, and his aide and successor Peter DeFazio does Oregon very, very proud.

Not all conservatives feel this way. We need some way to drive a more explicit wedge between the extremists and the mainstreamers. We need to cut off the Tea Party's core from the rank-and-file. Romney is trying to do that already, but he doesn't have the guts. (check that, Romney is wasting time trying to CONVINCE the teabaggers of his position). Perry is as crazy as Saddam and if he gets elected he will send demonstrators straight to the death chamber. The teabaggers mean to kill us and we need to get real about the threat they pose.

If it's not an issue, then why kick someone out if you find out they're homosexual? FFS, it's not like it's being mandated that everyone has to start playing for the same team. Men and women are putting their life on the line to protect the country they love and these asswipes want to make it illegal again. Get over it. The military hasn't collapsed in any country where openly homosexual soldiers serve. But what do you expect from a country that thinks it's repulsive to have a boob shown on TV but thinks it's fine that you show people blown away every night.

This will be another one for the campaign ads. The GOP might want to reconsider whether it's a good idea to have their debates in front of lives audiences. 42. Could This Be A Successful Framing Moment For Us?
Edited on Fri Sep-23-11 08:02 AM by Vogon_Glory
Could this be a successful framing moment for us Democrats and progressives? The Rethuglies have been able to successfully wrap themselves with the trappings of patriotism for years (Gawd, country, here's a successful soldier (Now move along, son, and don't expect much out of us once you leave the service sez the Republican)) while they've been extremely successful at painting progressives as "Amurrica-hating" "commie-libs."

Now we have Tea/publican boorishness on full public display. Not only that, but Tea/publican boorishness from an audience which, unlike their right-wing Republican forebears of thirty years ago, isn't NEARLY so leavened with people who had been in the US armed forces.

I don't know how many younger progressives heard the myth about US servicemen returning from southeast Asia during the Vietnam War being spat on and accused of being baby-killers by anti-war protesters in the late 1960's and early 1970's. I don't doubt that MOST of those stories were lies and gross exaggerations, but unfortunately, I fear there were JUST ENOUGH of those incidents committed by a tiny minority of self-important, self-righteous narcissistic wanna-be revolutionaries to give such stories weight that they didn't deserve.

The point of such a recollection is to show that such framing has potentially devastating impact. Right-wingers were able to take that frame and all too successfully use it not only on peace activists, but also other progressives and Democrats, and the right-wingers were able to successfully use it for DECADES.

The Republican debate of other evening had an audience sprinkled with boo-ing gay-bashers and an audience and candidates who might have disapproved of that soldier's homosexuality, and who ALSO REMAINED SILENT about honoring the sacrifices that man made for his country.

If there's a way to frame the memes to show that Tea-publicans don't honor or respect the troops, I think we progressives ought to do so and run, and RUN HARD WITH IT!

:dem:

:patriot:

We need to play it every minute of every day....but what's most important to show is that none of the Repug candidates thanked the soldier for his current deployment and none of them defended him.

The military people need to understand this is exactly how the Republicans view our military personnel.

Second, I was a bit shocked that there were only a couple of people doing the booing.. granted they did it loudly, but I was actually expecting it to be many more people in the crowd.

52. I was half kidding when I called into Steph Miller .....
.... last week and said that @ the next debate somebody would call for execution of people in comas who get
social security but some in the republican party and their supporters are truly vile.

1) The G.I. who asked the question is no little shrinking violet and is putting his ass on the line everyday.

2) This is not about special rights because the people with the special rights now are the bigots who get to spout their hate
speech 24/7 and tell others that their God hates them for being gay. Who the fuck gave them that right to be so nasty w/out
any repercussions?

3) Rick Santorum has real issues and hang ups about sex because:

a. No sexual activity in the military? Has he ever been around a military base? Bars, strip clubs, and massage parlors make a good business around
military bases both in and outside the United States.

b. Being a gay or lesbian does not mean you are always having sex any more than being straight mean you are having sex 24/7 too.

c. Rick seems very uncomfortable about people being sexual beings.

Booing an active soldier asking a question from the field is disgraceful. 'Candidates' who are supposed to be 'Leaders' and represent the 'best of the best' for this country not even trying to stop the crowd from booing that soldier, let alone speak out against it during the debate, is disgraceful. They do not represent me. How is this right for America?

they don't represent anything close to a majority of Americans. I won'd say we have nothing to fear, because fear is always a legitimate emotion vis a vis such, but the likelihood they would prevail in any serious contests is about nil. Americans at large are fair-minded.

90. They would have been classless even if they didn't boo...
Nearly ALL of them applauded when that jackass said that he would go back to making it so that gays would be kicked out if anyone discovered they were gay. I mean, even the people who are saying the guys who booes were morons, would love to have it so that soldiers like the one who asked question were not allowed in the military. I don't understand how the one's criticizing the booers think they are any better because they didn't boo. What they applauded and support is more disrespectful than any boo or slur said. How can they no see this?

Edited on Fri Sep-23-11 12:20 PM by octothorpe
Which sounds like it's true to an extent. Well, at least that it was only a few. So basically they are saying "most of us would never disrespect a soldier like that"... However, they all(most at least) go on to applaud Santorum when he said he basically doesn't think gays should be allowed serve in the military without living in the fear of being discharged if it's discovered they're gay.. Which is obviously far more harmful to gays than a couple idiots booing.

These people irritate me.

Mr. Hill is more of man, more of an American, and more patriotic than Santorum, all of the Repub candidates and the teabaggers combined, because he is putting his life on the line for this country. Steven Hill is serving our country, even though he knows idiots like the GOP and baggers hate him for what he is, would physically attack him if he were a civilian, deny him the right to marry, treat him as a non person, yet he still elects to defend them.

If I were a bagger, a GOP candidate, I would hang my head in shame.

that not a one of them who booed ever served a god damn day in the military or ever put their life on the line for their country in any capacity, or for anyone, not even themselves.

A bunch of doughy-bodied, ain't-never-served-a-day-in-their-miserable-life imps.

the fact that none of the candidates up there took a stand against that IN THE MOMENT tells me that they are not fit to be commander-in-chief. They ALL failed when leadership should have been displayed in that moment. That is why none of them are fit to be president.

And santorum waiting until the next day, from the safety of being in another state and half a day passing, to condemn it shows that he, too, is a coward; he is not a leader and he is not fit to occupy the office of commander-in-chief. None of them are. They are afraid of the mobs they've created with their bullshit over the past 3 1/2 years. They are afraid of lush limpballs and fux noose. The last thing this country needs is a pansy assed coward who has inhaled too much hairspray and on the high of those fumes, goes out a talks all shit about how tough they are. Tough would have been to shut that shit down in the moment. They are booing a US Military person who is laying his life on the line each and every day to assure that those assholes in the audience have the freedom to boo, which is a damn site more than what anyone booing has ever or will ever do in their lives.

I'm just stunned that these morons on that stage possess the staggering amounts of cowardice that it took to keep them riveted to their podiums with their lips sealed shut. This is how they will esteem the US Military when they become its commander-in-chief and quite frankly, IMO none of them deserve the obedience of any soldier should they make it to that office.

All of those republican cowards on stage proved they are not fit to be commander in chief of the armed forces of the United States!

I have never seen such a disgusting display of yellow cowardice as that! The republican candidates are all "patriots" like Ted Nugent who smeared his own excrement on himself to get classified 4F and escape serving in Vietnam!

And that other reich wing lying POS Rush Limpballs who claimed he couldn't serve because he had a boil on his FATASS!

These are the absolute bottom feeding pond scum that are booing a man putting his life on the line every day in a war zone!

I could care less what his sexual orientation is, its none of my business or the teabaggers either!

Limballs, Nugent and all the other chickenhawk teabaggers will never be HALF the man that brave solider is!
