Google opens Plus social network to everyone
Source: Poughkeepsie Journal

NEW YORK — Google says it has opened up its Google Plus social network to everyone after testing it for 12 weeks. It is also adding a search capability.

Google Inc. said in a blog post today that it will now let anyone sign up for Google Plus. Previously the service was only available by invitation, though it got easier to join in recent weeks.

Google Plus is the online search leader's attempt to compete with Facebook, by far the world's most populous online social network with more than 750 million users.

4. Leaving FB made me very happy; not joining this will just continue the joy.
Saw way too much hatred, racism, ugly stuff from some of my "friends" and family - couldn't take it - so flew the coop. Never ever looked back.

9. No kidding. I don't understand what it is about FB that makes people drop normal social filters,
but all the vile racist and sexist filth that is kept under wraps at face-to-face family gatherings is displayed for all to see...at least, among my family members. I have so much more peace of mind without it.

12. yeah, exactly my friend. I am asked all the time why I'm not on FB or myspace & I say why in the
world would I want to read all these people's anti-progressive hate (which covers a lot of things of course) and see their stupid posts that just aggravate...

and this new "plus" social network from the search engine masters is scarier than facebook imo. It requires you to be transparent about who you are on it, and then of course, they'll sell all the info they can on you to the highest bidder!

5. I've had a Google+ account since they started testing.
Biggest problem so far is simply that I only know one other person who uses it. It will be interesting to see if they can pull the critical mass needed to make it work.

7. Well, now that FB has lost its mind and changed the layout AGAIN
I notice a lot of my friends talking about joining Google+. I have been on Google+ since the beginning also and what you said is what keeps it from being very useful right now. Hopefully, a good number of my FB friends are serious about making the change.

8. The latest layout change is particularly horrible, isn't it?
I get changing the looks now and then, but this time I don't actually get a say as to who appears in either my "most recent" feed or this bullshit "top stories" one.

10. I use it and have more content than I can read.

Also the new features they just released are quite extraordinary. In hangouts (where you video conference with 8 people) you can now live collaborate on google documents, some other sketch tool, or share your desktop. This makes it nice for doing collaborative work.

They also now have 30 million users. Not FB numbers but enough to get a good flow of ideas (and not just everyone resharing the same animated GIF images)

11. Oh, nice - I was waiting to see when the collaborative stuff was going to kick off like that. (nt)
