EMILY’s List Backs Elizabeth Warren in Massachusetts Senate Race
Source: Roll Call

Harvard University professor and Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren has won the nod from EMILY’s List in her bid to unseat Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.), about 24 hours after she officially entered the race.

“The entire EMILY’s List community is geared up to help elect Elizabeth Warren the next Senator from Massachusetts,” EMILY’s List President Stephanie Schriock said in a statement. “Elizabeth is a champion for progressive values and a fighter for the middle class.”

Four other women have served as members of the Bay State’s Congressional delegation: Republican Reps. Edith Rogers and Margaret Heckler and Democratic Reps. Louise Day Hicks and Niki Tsongas. No woman has ever won a Senate seat in Massachusetts or been elected governor.

Before taking on Brown, Warren must first win a crowded Democratic primary.

1. I am not a Luddite
but 'EMILY's List' is a new one on me. Seems like everyone - Craig, Angie - has a list nowadays. Think I'll start Cirque's ShitList; suffice to say, you don't wanna be on it!

Anyway, glad to see endorsements for Ms. Warren - no matter that I've never heard of EMILY's List.

6. Emily's list has been around since 1984 and means Early Money Is Like Yeast
and it's a political action group.

(snip)
EMILY's List was founded in 1985, when 25 women met in the home of Ellen Malcolm. Their goal was to form a network to raise money for pro-choice female candidates. The network was designed to provide its members with information about candidates and encourage them to write checks directly to the candidates. In 1986, EMILY's List was instrumental in electing Barbara Mikulski of Maryland, the first Democratic woman elected to the US Senate in her own right.

In 2005, EMILY's List celebrated its 20th Anniversary at a gala in Washington, D.C. Speakers included then-newly elected Congresswoman Gwen Moore (WI), Senator Barbara Mikulski (MD), and Governor Jennifer Granholm (MI). Also in 2005, Ellen Moran took office as executive director for the second time to head the nation's largest political action committee, before becoming Barack Obama's communications director in November 2008.

In 2006, the group helped elect eight new pro-choice Democratic women to the U.S. House, aiding in the second largest increase in history at that time. The re-election of all female Senate incumbents and the addition of Sen. Claire McCaskill and Sen Amy Klobuchar brought the number of women in the Senate to a new high of 16.<3> For the 2006 election, EMILY's List raised about $46 million for candidates in the 2006 contests and it is listed as the biggest PAC in the nation by Political Money Line, an independent source of information about campaign fund-raising.<4>

On January 20, 2007, EMILY's List endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. The endorsement came within hours of Senator Clinton's announcement that she was forming an exploratory committee to run for president.

Thanks for providing more info. I am embarrassed in my ignorance. I'll be sure to support their endeavors from now on.

5. I seriously believe she could be President one day...
If Elizabeth Warren wanted to be President one day, I believe she could do it. Now, that would be an amazing run.
