Jude Law claims he was victim of News of the World phone hacking in US
Source: The Telegraph

The News of the World allegedly hacked into the mobile phones of Jude Law and his personal assistant while they were in New York, opening the way for News International to be prosecuted in the United States.

A senior Scotland Yard officer has told The Sunday Telegraph that News International executives – including Mr Murdoch’s son James – are being investigated for any alleged role in covering up the extent of “industrial scale” hacking.

¬snip¬

• Lawyers acting for David Beckham have contacted police, in the growing belief that the footballer and his wife, Victoria, were targeted by Glenn Mulcaire, a private investigator who worked for the News of the World. Sir Paul McCartney’s press aides claimed they were also hacked at the time of the former Beatle’s split from his second wife.

• Jude Law, the actor, was allegedly hacked by the News of the World while visiting the US, opening the way for prosecutions in America where News Corp has most to lose.

¬snip¬

It emerged last night that Hugh Grant, the actor, and the Jemima Khan, the heiress, had lodged a legal claim against the Met for failing to disclose details of evidence that their phones were being hacked by the News of the World.

Voicemails, when the home network is roaming abroad onto other networks, are on the home site - not the foreign site. In his case that's more likely to have been a UK providor - not US.

That's not to excuse the situation but the subject according to article is specifically voicemails :

Using information allegedly gleaned by hacking into Law's mobile phone voicemail as he waited in the baggage reclaim hall, the paper told how the actor had sent Mr Jackson ahead to check for waiting photographers, with instructions to ring him if it was safe to emerge. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/phone-hacking/8642624/Jude-Law-claims-he-was-victim-of-News-of-the-World-phone-hacking-in-US.html

18. Whoa, dipsydoodle, look what your link says! Wonderful news.
From your link:
Their mobile telephones were operating on American networks, meaning that regardless of where the alleged hacker was based, American law would apply.

It would leave News International open to claims that it broke US federal laws and also pave the way for costly lawsuits.

21. The point Judi
is that you only go through to voicemail if you can't connect. If it didn't connect it wasn't on a US network. Not connecting keeps it the home network which in this case was most probably UK assuming he was using his normal phone. In other words its a UK only issue in this case.

:hi:

31. Probably not coincidental that
1. The logic you're objecting to would seem to hold--American laws apply if the mobile phones were operating on American networks, but if voice mail were used it's very likely that the phones weren't actually operating on American networks; and,

2. That this bit's been edited out of the newspaper story. The legal opinion wasn't referenced and was, after all, expressed as the apodosis of a covert if-then structure. If the protasis doesn't hold (example of a protasis: "if the protasis doesn't hold"), then the apodosis doesn't hold (example of an apodosis: "then the apodosis doesn't hold").

34. Except for how the hack worked
The hack requires calling the handset. The handset was connected to the US network. So hacking the phone inherently uses the US network.

Phone hacking: New body blows for Rupert Murdoch
Rupert Murdoch and his family are facing a series of damaging new allegations over their handling of the phone-hacking scandal.

By Robert Mendick and Jonathan Wynne-Jones

9:01PM BST 16 Jul 2011

A senior Scotland Yard officer has told The Sunday Telegraph that News International executives – including Mr Murdoch’s son James – are being investigated for any alleged role in covering up the extent of “industrial scale” hacking.

The Metropolitan Police want to know why a series of emails, dating back to 2006, were only made available to detectives in January, prompting the current inquiry that has led in the past two weeks to the closure of the News of the World, the resignations of executives Rebekah Brooks and Les Hinton, the arrest of Andy Coulson and the scrapping of News Corporation’s proposed takeover of BSkyB.

The source said: “News International appears to have covered up this scandal. That is potentially a conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. It would have to be proved that James Murdoch, Rebekah Brooks or any other senior executive knew the information handed over in 2011 was actually in the system in 2006 and suppressed it.

.................

News International has confirmed that a series of emails had been read by senior executives – a source declined to say who – before being sent in 2007 to an outside law firm where they remained for four years before being handed to police

23. Sad thing is, anyone only cares when it's Celebs ....
... The fact that our own T-comm companies are regularly hacking Joe and Jane Sixpack for "potential terrorist information" still goes mainly unnoticed and uncared about here in the US.

Whatever happened to our privacy rights, plain and simple??
