Obama, Boehner win at golf summit
Source: Associated Press

BARACK Obama and House Speaker John Boehner put partisanship aside, at least on the golf course, and teamed up to triumph on the final hole in their long-awaited links outing.

The match pitted the political rivals against Vice-President Joe Biden and Ohio's Republican governor John Kasich. The match was won on the 18th hole, with the winning partners each pocketing a $2 prize ...

Biden was cool under pressure, sinking a 15-to-20 foot putt ...

1. Well, Tip O'Neill and Ronald Reagan used to often share a drink after hours.
Non-stop partisan hatred only became "normal" under Clinton's presidency.

2. Consider Ted Kennedy...
I think Ted Kennedy was a good example of this...although he could spar with the best of them, after hours, he knew how to deal with them. This new era of constant bickering and belittling gets absolutely nothing done. They pander in front of the cameras and make bad deals behind the scenes. Or, worse, they do nothing at all. I'm hopeful that the generation after us, will be saner.

6. Maybe its just nitpicking, but I find it odd that they refer to Boehner as "house speaker"
Edited on Sat Jun-18-11 11:52 PM by MadBadger
But not Obama, as "President"

9. Australian editing - they assume everyone knows who Obama is, while the others might need explaining
AP, and most US sources, will give someone's title the first time it's used in a story, no matter how famous the person. Other countries (eg Australia, or the UK) may not bother with that. So, if you find the AP story on Yahoo, it opens:

WASHINGTON President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner put partisanship aside ...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110618/ap_on_sp_ot/us_obam...

But the Australian site decide they could forego the 'President' for Obama. If they haddecided to be as precise as AP is, they'd have to say "US President Barack Obama and ...".

8. Don't take it personally, struggle4progress, but this story is just a waste.
Boehner plays far too much golf. It's disgusting to think that Obama is trivializing the real problems that the Republicans, especially Boehner and Kasich are creating for the American middle class by playing golf with them.

It's just obnoxious. Obama is trying to be cute and find a "middle ground."

I am not interested in Obama's constant capitulation in order to look like a great compromiser. We do not need compromises at this time in history. Far, far from it.

10. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.
It was a round of golf. To the extent it might help these two gents see each other as fellow human beings, it might have benefits. On the other hand, it was just a round of golf. It is not capitulation or compromise, it is a game where you strike little white balls with crooked sticks.

20. With John Boehner?
Obama is up to no good. That golf game is a very bad sign for those of us who do or will rely on Social Security and Medicare any time in the future.

Obama is about to impose more austerity on the American people. Shame on him. You don't play golf with someone who leads a party that wants to party with money that someone else needs for medical care.

12. Crap like that should be illegal. Last thing we need is the
Republicans and Democrats getting together to figure out more and better ways to screw us over.
For a regular Joe the word "bipartisanship" is nothing but a signal to bend over.

The hardon spends all his time derailing the President but they have time for golf. Maybe its a keep your friends close and your enemies closer sort of thing but as a cynic I doubt it.
