Crash girl found after ten days
Rescuers in California have found a five-year-old girl near the wreckage of a car which crashed 10 days earlier.
Ruby Bustamante was apparently unhurt when her mother's car rolled off the road and into a ravine.

Norma Bustamante died of her injuries while Ruby is said to have survived on dried noodles and energy drinks.

She was found when workers repairing a barrier spotted the car in a desert canyon near Riverside, about 90 miles (145 km) east of Los Angeles.

..cut...

orma's great grandfather, Bill Cooney, has criticised California's highway police for not searching for Ruby and her mother.

They were first reported missing on 4 April.

Ruby has said her mother was still alive for a few days after the crash, Mr Cooney told television reporters.

3. Amazing how families in their grief are so fast to lay blame!
I would be thinking of anything but blaming someone else.. She ran off a mountainous road in the rain, perhaps she was speeding, perhaps she was on the cell phone. Unless you've been on those roads, you have no idea how impossible it would be to figure out where she might have disappeared to. Indio to the jail in Norwalk is a HUGE drive... It's not like this woman vanished within a few blocks from her house.

Thankfully, her daughter survived. She has a tough life ahead of her.. 5 siblings without a mother, and mom's boyfriend in jail. Very tragic life already... she's a strong girl, though.

crashed nearly every week. It is a winding area of highway with a great deal of curves and some areas are wooded. The workers were apparently offroad so they could see the wreck....but it is difficult to see from the road.

Sadly, if she had a cell phone, she probably might have survived.

13. The police saw the gaping hole in the guard rail, and did not
think of venturing down the slope to see if there was something there. Lazy cops more like. Terrible.

14. Okay, now you've pissed me off

I've seen figures from 150 feet down the cliff to 300 ft., so we're talking a half a football field to a full football field down, then UNDER a tree. Lazy cops? What was her family doing for these 10 days? One would think they could have driven the route from the jail to Indio, slowly, and look for evidence of an accident.

Even though the little girl said that her mother was alive for "a few days", a 6 year old doesn't generally have a good understanding of living vs. dead beyond the obvious. She may have thought her mother was alive until decomposition had really progressed. From the AP article:

"The Riverside County coroner's office said Wednesday an autopsy indicated Bustamante likely died within minutes of the accident from blunt force trauma."

It's tragic that the mother died and it's a miracle the little girl survived, but let's not beat up the police about it.

16. But It's So EASY To Just Shout "Racism!"
...after a while, it becomes a reflex. You know...like a knee jerk.

17. it's not a knee jerk reaction...
Just a logical assumption based on the facts and previous experience.

18. No it isn't a logical assumption....

With virtually no information to go on you're assuming that racism had anything to do with this. That's crap. A lot of the info suggests that it would have been VERY difficult to find this woman.

I suggest you wait a while until you start shouting about racism in this case - if you shout "racism" every time something bad happens to a non-white person, you'll lose all credibility.

19. Why didn't her family find her?
If your relatives went missing like that, wouldn't you go looking where she went?
