Mt Etna in Sicily errupts, international airport closed
Source: Echo

Mt Etna in Sicily has erupted sending plumes of ash in the sky, closing the local international airport at Catania-Fontanarosa, Bulgarian media reported on May 12 2011.

According to the Italian national Institute of geophysics and seismology, the latest blast has opened a new crater on the eastern slope of the volcano, which then began to spew lava and volcanic ash, the report said.

5. Can't be too bad...the Giro d'Italia will still have a stage race up there.
Giro d'Italia 2011: Mount Etna eruption not expected to cause problems despite rocks falling on roads

Organisers say Sunday’s stage of the Giro d’Italia will go ahead despite the eruption of nearby Mount Etna throwing stones on to some of the roads that will be used.

Wednesday night’s eruption – on the eastern side of the south-east crater – was not massive but was significant enough to see a fine dust settle on surrounding villages and small rocks fall on some of the roads that are scheduled to be used on Sunday.

Nearby Catania airport also closed down for a while until the dust had settled.

“Sunday’s stage is not at risk. The stretch in question is only the last four miles on Etna,” said Giro director Angelo Zomegnan. “But on-site teams are already working to clear the road. We are calm.”
