Arizona second best in job growth
April 13 - Arizona is now No. 2 in job growth nationally, behind only Nevada, according to a report from the Bank One Economic Outlook Center at Arizona State University.

The state's economy added 49,200 jobs in February, a 2.2 percent increase over February 2003. Nevada added 43,900 jobs during that period, a 4.1 percent increase.

"The best sector in Arizona with over 8 percent job growth was construction, so construction is really booming here," said Dawn McLaren, an economist with the center. "Next was education and health services, with over 5 percent job growth. After that was professional and business services."

One of the weakest sectors was telecommunications, which shed more jobs last month, she said.

"We're now talking about having really well recovered in the number of jobs we have here," McLaren said. "During the worst part of the whole period of losing jobs, we went down to about 2 million workers, maybe less, and now we're up to 2.3 million. We've come back there."

2. I don't know whether to laugh or cry
"The best sector in Arizona with over 8 percent job growth was construction, so construction is really booming here,"

The biggest job growth was in one of the biggest exploiters of illegal immigrant labor.

it has benefitted the larger tribes very well.

9. Yeah, but have you driven through Phoenix lately?
Man, a nightmare.

The Canyon is nice, though. That Meteor Crater was a bit of a disappointment, but I shouldn't have set my expectations so high.

So that's good. No daylight savings time there either. And they DO celebrate MLK day. "Put on your rainbow shades", Arizona is hot!

13. Or jobs for illegals only...
I got to the Valley of the Sun back in July and I'm still looking for a full-time job. Been temping and getting very frustrated. No offense to the natives/long-timers, but I don't see why people keep moving here. I'm more nervous about my personal safety now and I used to live in the Washington DC area!

17. Has Phoenix changed for the worse?
I visited there a couple of times back in '72 and '74 and found it to be a very pleasant place. Yes, it was HOT but the low humidity made it feel wonderful compared to the summer steambaths we often have to endure in St. Louis. However, I understand that, with all the population growth, smog is a problem and the humidity has gone up because of people wanting to have lawns and nice green golf courses in a desert. Hence irrigation and a rise in humidity. (If I lived there, I'd rather have desert landscaping; more pleasant to rake the sand and rocks rather then mow a lawn.)

Maybe they are looking to get a little more pocket change. Or they need a job to pay for more expensive drugs.
