Hollywood mulls film version of bin Laden killing
Source: AFP

It is only a matter of time before Osama bin Laden's killing by crack US forces is made into a Hollywood film -- and one Oscar-winning director could be ahead of the game, reports said.

Kathryn Bigelow, who won an Academy Award in 2010 for "The Hurt Locker," was already working on a movie about the Al-Qaeda leader's death -- which she could still re-think after Sunday's covert operation in Pakistan.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Bigelow has already been discussing a project provisionally entitled "Kill Bin Laden," based on a previous botched attempt to get the Al-Qaeda chief.

She and her screenwriting collaborator Mark Boal -- who worked with Bigelow on Iraq war drama "The Hurt Locker" -- have been meeting with actors for the action thriller project, when Sunday's shock development occurred.

"But now that Bin Laden has been killed, what happens to the Kill Bin Laden project?" it said, adding that the original project was based "on a failed Black Ops mission by the US military to capture the Al-Qaeda leader."

2. I think the ending will be better now
It will actually make a much better film with the whole story told, a good contrast in approaches (tora bora vs. pakistan)

6. There is no Hollywood
It's an unofficial district of Los Angeles. There is no consensus in the business about anything.

Projects will be mounted: it's a story.

Joel Surnow should be free now...

18. You're only partially correct.
Hollywood is the only district in Los Angeles that is recognized as a distinctive community and sub-district. The state of California officially recognizes it as a distinct geographic entity, and collects tax and census data on it seperate from that of the rest of Los Angeles. A bill pushed through the Assembly and signed by the governor in 2006 confirmed this unique identity, and even defined very specific borders for "Hollywood" (AB 588 2005, you can look it up yourself if you don't believe me).

The border can be loosely described as the area east of West Hollywood, south of Mulholland Drive, Laurel Canyon, Cahuenga Boulevard, and Barham Boulevard, and the cities of Burbank and Glendale, north of Melrose Avenue and west of the Golden State Freeway and Hyperion Avenue. This includes all of Griffith Park and Los Feliz. The population of the district, including Los Feliz, as of the 2000 census was 123,436.

12. It would be in poor taste but it would certainly do good things for Obama's image
in a society raised by the media, especially if they got a huge name star to play him and managed to get it out before election time (or right there abouts. Fall 2012 release anyone?)

13. "it would certainly do good things for Obama's image"
Maybe, maybe not....it just depends on who all is involved in writing, directing, producing and who they cast for the roles, if its done by News Corp you can almost guarantee that it will praise the Bush administration at every turn.

20. I haven't seen one particularly good movie on 9/11, Afghanistan, or Iraq
Edited on Tue May-03-11 08:09 PM by fujiyama
The Green Zone(was that the name - the Matt Damon flick?) was OK, but that was about the only one I remember.

I didn't see the Hurt Locker. Heard mixed reviews. Maybe I'll catch it some time. I've just felt bored watching fictional stories surrounding ongoing events. I'd prefer just catching a news article on it.

It's funny, because I often like historical fiction and/or movies based on historical events, but then again those are mostly before my time ("All the Presidents Men, "Apocalypse Now", and other Vietnam war movies come to mind). I also liked "Charlie Wilson's War" but that was more about the congressman and the Afghan/Russian war so I don't think that counts.

21. Hurt Locker is a superb movie imho...
..and if this story is to be believed I am hopeful of a decent portrayal of these recent events due to the folks that are involved in it..
