BP Sues Maker of Blowout Preventer
Source: AP/abc

BP sued the maker of the device that failed to stop last year's calamitous Gulf oil spill on Wednesday, alleging that negligence by the manufacturer helped cause the disaster.

The British company said in papers filed in federal court in New Orleans that Cameron International provided a blowout preventer with a faulty design, which caused an unreasonable amount of risk that harm would occur.

The suit, filed on the first anniversary of the explosion that led to the spill, seeks damages to help BP pay for the tens of billions of dollars in liabilities it has incurred from the disaster.

1. If I remember correctly, someone overrode the suggestion that there was a
problem with a seal, and to keep going anyway. I can't recall if that was a BP official, Deepwater official, Halluburton official. But someone overrode the "we better seal this now" suggestion. 11 lives, and untold damage was done because one individual made one of the worst decisions of all time.

The blame lies with that individual, as with other situations that became apparent after the fact...bottom line though, one idiot blew it.

4. So if BP wins this lawsuit,
will the people then have grounds to immediately shut down any oil rigs using this known faulty BOP?

5. I kinda remember they knew the BOP was defective before they even installed it.

One pair of the redundant controls not working. And then they accidentally damage the seal during a test. Who ever overroad that failer and told them to keep drilling should be in prison for several hundred years.

Drilling Systems - TL Blowout Preventer
The Cameron TL BOP is the result of an evolution of Cameron's successful BOP product line including the U, U-II and T BOPs. The TL integrates all of the design features of these popular BOPs into a more lightweight unit. Like the T BOP, the TL features side ram removal, a major break-through in saving rig time and reducing BOP height requirements. In addition, the TL incorporates the bonnet seal carrier and other features which reduce maintenance and cut rig time.

Bonnet seal carrier eliminates high make-up torque on bonnet studs and nuts. Bonnet studs reduce the need to make and break threads in the BOP body. Most operating system seals can be replaced with bonnet in ram-change position without removing the bonnets. Hydraulically opening ST Locks and wedgelocks are available. ST locks and wedgelocks can be interlocked with the BOP operating system using sequence caps to ensure that the lock is retracted before the BOP is opened.
