Arpaio mocks mentally ill in mugshot contest

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio began a "mugshot of the day" contest today, in which web surfers can vote for their favorite photo taken of inmates at Arpaio's jails.

Inevitably, on the first day, at least one of the top vote-getters is seriously mentally ill.

... Earlier today, I wrote an email to Neal Cash, CEO of the Community Partnership of Southern Arizona, about the mugshot contest.

His response: "This is incredibly disturbing almost beyond belief."

Is Arpaio really committed to protecting the people of his county or is he using his position of power to be a pompous showoff? I'm all for criminal mugshots posted to the public/distributed to the media, but this use is just inappropriate!

Oh, and this doesn't help him as the Justice Department is investigating the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office for civil rights violations.
