Uganda would offer Gaddafi asylum if asked: report

CAIRO — Uganda would welcome Muammar Gaddafi if he requested asylum, Al Arabiya reported on Wednesday after Western and others states suggested the Libyan leader should go into exile to end the conflict in his country.

The television channel did not give further details about the African state's offer.

The United States, Britain and Qatar, which joined others at a meeting on Libya in London on Tuesday, suggested Gaddafi and his family could be allowed to go into exile if they took up the offer quickly to end six weeks of bloodshed.

Uganda takes control of more Libyan interests

By Elias Biryabarema

KAMPALA (Reuters) - Uganda's government said on Tuesday it had taken control of Libya's majority stake in Uganda Telecom, the latest move to freeze Libyan assets in the east African nation in compliance with U.N. sanctions.

Information, Communication and Technology Minister Aggrey Awori told Reuters the takeover of Uganda's fourth largest mobile operator was partly to deter "predators" from seizing the firm's holdings.

"We have exercised our oversight and regulatory role and decided to impose an oversight regime on the company," Awori said by telephone.

"We were preparing to seize their property over unpaid debt worth over 20 billion shillings but we understand the government has decided to take it over to forestall this," a senior MTN Uganda official told Reuters.
