Journalist Daniel Coronell claims Uribe also intercepted his emails

Journalist Daniel Coronell told a Congressional committee that former President Alvaro Uribe intercepted his personal emails as well as his phone calls.

The Semana columnist and incoming director of Univision made this claim Thursday in front of the Chamber of Representatives Accusations Committee.

Coronell maintained that former President Alvaro Uribe was the main person responsible for intercepting his phone calls during the government wiretapping scandal, and stated that his cell phone and personal emails were also spied on, Caracol Radio reported.

The key piece of evidence presented, according to newspaper El Espectador, made reference to a document in which Martha Leal, former assistant director of Colombia's intelligence agency DAS, ordered Coronell's phone calls to be intercepted.

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) had filed a case against Colombia before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights for failing to prosecute a journalist's attackers.

Colombian journalist Luis Gonzalo "Richard" Velez Restrepo was attacked by soldiers on August 29, 1996, while filming members of the army beat demonstrators at a protest march, according to a IACHR press release on Friday.

After the event, Velez and his family began receiving death threats which intensified further when Velez tried to promote the judicial process relating to the original attack.

Velez was eventually forced into exile after being the victim of a kidnap attempt on October 9, 1997.
