The Organisation of the Islamic Conference (OIC) has held a meeting of its executive committee in Jeddah on the situation in Libya.

The body has called on member-states to begin establishing contacts with the Benghazi-based opposition's National Council. Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, the body's secretary-general said:

"Since legitimacy emanates from the people and if force is utilised against the people, legitimacy loses its foundations. Therefore we call upon the OIC members states to establish contacts with the Libyan interim national council."

African Union demands 'immediate' halt to Libya attacks

(AFP) – 2 hours ago

NOUAKCHOTT — The African Union's panel on Libya Sunday called for an "immediate stop" to all attacks after the United States, France and Britain launched military action against Moamer Kadhafi's forces.

After a more than four-hour meeting in the Mauritanian capital, the body also asked Libyan authorities to ensure "humanitarian aid to those in need," as well as the "protection of foreigners, including African expatriates living in Libya."

It underscored the need for "necessary political reforms to eliminate the causes of the present crisis" but at the same time called for "restraint" from the international community to avoid "serious humanitarian consequences."

22. Gaddafi declared ‘King of Africa’ by Kenyan elders
Source: Zim Eye

Published: January 15, 2011

Lybia’s ruler Muammah Gaddafi on Friday enjoyed a cheap glory-boost when Community elders from Kenya landed in Lybia’s capital Tripoli to crown him ’King of Africa’.

The poverty-stricken elders who were airlifted from Nairobi and enjoyed an air -flight for the first time at Gaddafi’s expense, declared Lybia’s ruler the King of Africa, during a ceremony in a traditional tent at the leader’s farm. An Imbongi who ran with a water-smeared feather-brush shook the traditional object on Gaddafi several times declaring him ‘The King of Africa’.

=snip=

Speaking shortly after the ceremony, Gaddafi, a Robert Mugabe ally, made his voice even louder on his vision for a unified Africa:

“We must have a defence minister for Africa. We must have one African army to defend Africa,” he said.

I don't think Libyan State TV is any more capable of telling the truth than our own faux versions

Gadhafi would happily truck in bodies to provide "proof", or if bodies were not available, he's more than capable of rustling up all he needs on short notice.

32. If a news source tells me what I want to hear and supports my argument, I believe it
If not, I dismiss it.

You may argue that this makes me no different than the ideologues on the Right, but I'd say that's false equivalence because the phrase "false equivalence" has a nice ring to it so I invoke it as much as possible.

26. You're sure there aren't that many, or that none of them are civilians?
Why, because the U.S. Military doesn't pop off the odd innocent now and then? Did they "have it coming" since they're near targets? Are deaths in the act of trying to influence a particular side in a civil war somehow okay if the other side is known to be bad?

112 cruise missles were fired at 20 targets yesterday. If 20 hit their intended targets, where do you think the other 92 landed. America loves standing back and firing missles. The innocent's that die are just " causulties "

31. They fire multiple missiles at a single target
a single target might be a missile site with 4 launchers, a radar and a command truck. They might fire 10 missiles at that target to ensure everything is destroyed.

34. And meanwhile the Guardian has reported...
that there are reports from Libya of Gaddafi's forces moving bodies of those killed in clashes between the regime and rebels to the sites of air strikes in order to claim them as casualties of the bombings. So forgive me if I doubt the veracity of this.
