Petition to pull “gay cure” app hits 20,000 signatures
Source: Cult of Mac

An online petition to pull an app from iTunes targeted at “homosexual strugglers” has reached 20,000 signatures.

Apple has not commented publicly on whether it intends to pull the free app from Christian group Exodus International and did not return Cult of Mac’s request for comment.

Last November, Apple removed an app called the Manhattan Declaration from the iTunes store after outcry and over 7,000 signatures on an online poll that the content was an anti-gay and hate-mongering. The app makers asked to have it re-instated to no avail.

The group behind the latest petition, Truth Wins Out, has also asked Apple to intervene but received no response. Signers of the petition more than tripled since our last post on the Exodus app.

1. Wow, there really is an app for that??
Is there one for curing insufferable self-righteousness, too?

2. The people who get the App

Would have to be gay? Thats who they are honing in on.
How popular could this app be?
I never tried it and already I can tell you it does not work.
Whoever manufactured it: 'get a life buddy.'

Not to mention its former chairman John Paulk was caught in a gay bar.

6. Wasn't another one of their speakers
caught with a "Rent-boy" male prostitute in Europe for ten days? There are so many of these "anti-gay" people that end up caught in gay bars, with male prostitutes or having a "wide stance" in airport bathrooms, it is hard to keep track of them all.

8. Honestly.. I'm not in favor of banning/pulling the app.
While it's completely idiotic and irrational at best, it's still an application for a phone that people can choose to purchase or not purchase. It's not going to work and it won't catch on.

Gay people aren't going to download the app and suddenly say, "You know what... I don't like penis anymore. I will leave my loving spouse of 10 years now, because this application has set me 'straight.' Sure, he was there for me during horrible times when people would spew hatred at us and hope for our deaths while claiming that we were going to hell. But.. I can see their points now. Gee golly, this app works!"

No. Not at all.

However, people should have the choice of wasting their money on this application if they so desire.

18. Doubtful. Then again, who knows..

But, why would it matter? It would be just as effective. Or, ineffective, to put it more honestly.

If they feel like wasting their time and people feel like wasting their time downloading it, let them. No one's forced to do anything.

32. While I agree that it can be offensive...
I just don't think that laws or rules should be based around people taking offense or not.

Once again, if they've pulled other potentially offensive applications, then this one should go. However, in general, so long as it's legal, I don't see the need to pull any application.

I believe in people's ability to choose what they do or don't want.

12. people should have the choice of wasting their money on this application
Then they can get it from another distributer

Especially with the history of what Apple did with the other app.

20. Well.. I'm not in favor of banning any app.
So long as it's not illegal. However, if they ban anything offensive to any group, I suppose this should go into that category.

However, I'm not in favor of any sort of censorship.

"Censorship is telling a man he can't have a steak just because a baby can't chew it." Mark Twain.

26. Censorship refers to coercive use of GOVERNMENT to abridge speech.
Not what is at issue here in the least.

33. Censorship is not strictly government issued
It's simple someone/other people supervising the manners or moralities of others. That is what it is at it's base. This falls into that category and I don't believe in it.

34. As a gay man, I would definitely curb my enthusiasm for the hosting company, and
further, would speak out against the promotion of homophobia.

You are certainly entitled to feel that anyone who wants to spread hatred and bigotry should be free to do so with your personal assistance, if they pay you for your time and costs.

I disagree.

We on the Left should be taking every step possible
to starve the Right until they are (to coin a phrase)
"small enough to drown in a bathtub".

16. Just a point of correction -- doesn't really change your argument....
the OP clearly states that the app is free.

"whether it intends to pull the free app from Christian group Exodus International"

Oh, btw, I don't agree based on their history of pulling another offensive app.

21. What it will do is reinforce all the negative feelings GLBT youth have
about themselves, which we've seen leads to a suicide rate multiple times higher than the average for that age group.

Hell, they've got to get past the age restriction on some of the games they want to download because they're violent - yet they can download this one which tells them how horrible they are

35. That's the point and the problem. Thank you. This app is psychological torture.
Teens kill themselves because of the "work" of Exodus International. This is not a matter of adults taking offense or not. It's a public mental health issue for young people. If the company doesn't allow pornography to be traded as apps, why would they allow this?

You want to see the anti-gay app pulled? Refuse to buy apple products. If a quarter of the country told them "We're not buying a single thing you make until you get rid of this shit." you'd see it gone pretty quickly.
