Al Quaeda Threat Included in Bush Memo
Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 08:43 PM by amandabeech
If I heard it correctly, August 6, 2001, daily briefing memo stated that Al Quaeda operatives were known to have entered the U.S. a few months previous with intentions to use explosives, or something to that effect. Anybody else here this?

Amanda

I thought they said that they had been warned 3 months before the Aug PDB that there were Bin Laden people trying to get into the US for an explosive attack. AP reporting that the WH had been warned.

2. Well, "trying to get in" is a litle better than "got in."
Do you have a link to the AP article? I can't find it.

6. Al Qaeda mentioned in the PDB
in connection with both explosives and hijackings? This didn't get anybody worked up? Maybe my imagination is a lot more fertile than Condi's.

Condi was a figure skater as a girl, and I took it up a little recreationally as an adult. My skating friends told me that Condi was very, very good at school figures--tracing fancy 8's with loops and fancy turns very precisely--but poor at free skating in which you're all over the ice doing jumps and spins like on TV. Really good free skaters tend to be creative and often unconventional types, the kind of person to have a good imagination. Maybe *Bush should find himself a good free skater to make up for Condi's weakness while he's still i the White House.

Or maybe Kerry should look for one for his first cabinet.

18. Did you enter college
at the age of 15? Did you get your doctorate by the age of 26? Did you have 2 of your classmates blown up in a Birmingham church? You guys need to lay off the southern black americans.

22. I don't think anyone here is attacking southern anyone....
and very few of us have a doctorate, but all of
us have witnessed over 500 American soldiers getting
killed in Iraq for no good reason, and almost any of
us would have figured out something needed to be done
if presented with intelligence that said Bin Laden
wanted to blow things up in America and airplanes
were juicey targets to overtake and use against us.

Rice failed the American people, and all the education
and ice skating and piano talent is not going to change
the fact that she failed in her protection of Americans.

She should apologize and resign.

24. In all of the above posts, I do not see
any reference to geography, race or even sex.

How did you jump to the conclusion that this is somehow an attack on "southern black americans"?

Ms. Rice failed in her responsibilities. Period.

19. The article states that the Aug. 6th, 2002 memo
delivered to BushAndRice contained warning that the Alqueda attack was to be made within the 2001 time frame, which makes the memo of great importance. Because it didn't indicate the date, time and place the attack was to take place, Rice delivers it to the history bin, apparently irrelevelent to her way of thinking. Apparently nothing came down from this higher authority in the White House to make any preparations for such an event, such as warnings to prospective attack targets. For Gods sake, as the facts bear out, even air force defence was not in readiness for such an attack.

21. According to earlier reporting
some time ago, the FBI was aware that AlQueda cells existed within the US and some members were attending flight schools in Fla. Turns out those members were the ones who attacked the towers with airplanes that Rice stated somewhere along the line that she "was not aware of".

8. Al Q. Cells
Ms Rice said that she knew there were Al Q. cells in the US but didn't feel the need to do anything about them. Guess she felt that
the FBI were taking care of them. It's all a bit bizzare in my view.

10. "Al Q. Cells"
AQ bombed the World Trade Center once and liked the results; the chatter was VERY, VERY ,VERY high before 9-11; now we see a memo states that AQ was in this country planning another explosion. Am I crazy, or is it too much to expect that these people would put 2 and 2 together and realize the WTC was a primo target!!! Oh, I'm sorry--no one told her to do anything about it. YIIIIIIIKES!!!!

11. So PDB is not so "historical" in nature as Rice said?
Any legal consequences for this kind of misrepresentation under oath? "It wasn't a threat warning" or words to that effect, right?

13. Of course it was historical
It said that Al-Qaeda operatives had already entered the country. Past tense. Look, this is a forward-thinking administration. The president was not interested in swatting flies that were already in the house. What's done is done. Let's look ahead.

12. Your government inaction.
"To the best of my knowledge, Mr. Chairman, this kind of analysis about the use of airplanes as weapons actually was never briefed to us," (Rice) said. "I cannot tell you that there might not have been a report here or a report there that reached somebody in our midst."

What exactly do these people do between 9 and 5 on weekdays?

15. I cannot wait for this PDB to be printed in the NYT and the WPost
so that I can read the whole thing together. Hindsight IS 20-20, as my moderate friends have pointed out, but I cannot see why some of this stuff seemingly galvanized no one into action.

Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 08:31 PM by alg0912
Can you edit your subject line to say: "al-Qaida Threat Included in Bush Memo" and include this link: http://customwire.ap.org/dynamic/stories/S/SEPT_11_BUSH_MEMO?SITE=WABEJ&SECTION=HOME in the body of your message? The subject line change is a must, or this post will have to be locked (as per DU rules).

Thanks! :hi:

17. for an explosives attack,
August 2001 memo included recent information
<snip>
The same month as that briefing of Bush, U.S. intelligence officials received two uncorroborated reports suggesting terrorists might use airplanes, including one that suggested that al-Qaida operatives were considering flying a plane into a U.S. embassy, current and former government officials said.

26. Hi again amandabeech
First off, thank you so much for changing your subject line and including a link in your post. Your quick response is greatly appreciated!

Unfortunately, I didn't see that there's an earlier, duplicate post on the contents of the 8/6/01 PDB story, so I'm going to have to lock this as a dupe.

I'm really sorry. :( But please feel free to continue the discussion here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x476507

I'm sorry. Thanks! :hi:
