U.N. Security Council slaps sanctions on Libya

Resolution also says deadly crackdown against protesters should be referred to International Criminal Court

The U.N. Security Council Saturday unanimously imposed travel bans and asset freezes on Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, members of his family and inner circle.

The resolution unanimously adopted by the 15-nation council also called for the immediate referral of the deadly crackdown against anti-government demonstrators in Libya to the International Criminal Court in The Hague for investigation and possible prosecution of anyone responsible for killing civilians.

Earlier in Washington, U.S. President Barack Obama said Gadhafi should step down immediately. It was the first time Obama has called for Gadhafi to resign, coming after days of bloodshed in Libya. Gadhafi has vowed to fight to the end to maintain his four-decade grip on power in the North African country.

1. And again, I have to say these are the sanctions that Bushco lifted when our Big Oil
wanted to get into Libya to rebuild their crumbling oil infrastructure. So the deals were made and Libya became our "friend".

Not that sanctions probably would have stopped this, but I think Bush is getting a pass (natch) on this, too, so I keep posting it. :grr:

Pleased to see the move to try those who are killing the civilians. :headbang:

2. msnbc says they've slapped arms sanctions on Libya too (not on
anything the people need). I hope they're serious. This is a unanimous vote by the Security Council. That doesn't happen very often.

3. This resolution is justified. But let me ask, when is the UNSC going to refer the criminal actions
of the Bush Administration to the International Criminal Court in The Hague?
