U.K. cancels plan to sell forest land

The Record

LONDON — In one of the biggest U-turns since Britain's coalition government took power, Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman announced Thursday that a plan to sell off 600,000 acres of England's forests was being scrapped after an outcry from nature lovers and environmentalists.

It is an unexpected defeat for Prime Minister David Cameron's administration, which has ordered $128 billion cut from public spending. One proposal called for the privatization of government-owned woodland, which amounts to almost one-fifth of English forests.

5. May possibly have been a contrived situation.
They might have intended to scrap the plans from the outset.

Whatever - I'm please its not going ahead. The main issue was the risk of losing public rights of way and roaming.

10. The Sheriff of Nottingham is really pissed off
He was planning to buy some of that forest so he could chop it down and sell the wood to the peasants for their cooking fires.
