Australian Northeast Braces For Cyclone
Source: UPI

TOWNSVILLE, Australia, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- The northeastern coast of Australia was bracing Sunday for the arrival of Cyclone Anthony, which was packing 95 mph winds, forecasters said.

Forecaster David Grant of the Tropical Cyclone Warning Center told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. the cyclone was expected to make landfall near Bowen in the state of Queensland Sunday night and turn southward as it moved inland and weakened.

The center also warned the cyclone could dump as much as 11 inches of rain, the report said.

4. That was the small one - now comes the real problem
Edited on Mon Jan-31-11 06:51 PM by muriel_volestrangler
Residents along Queensland's northern coastline have been warned they have only a day to prepare for Tropical Cyclone Yasi.

The category three cyclone is moving closer to the coast from the Coral Sea and is expected to make landfall, likely between Innisfail and Proserpine, late tomorrow night.
...
Authorities are estimating the cyclone could drop up to a metre of rain in some areas.
...
It will dwarf tropical cyclone Anthony, which made landfall at Bowen on Sunday night as a category two but quickly dissipated, causing minimal damage.
