Powell Cautions Kennedy on Iraq Remarks
WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Colin Powell cautioned Sen. Edward M. Kennedy to be more careful in criticizing the war in Iraq after the Massachusetts Democrat called the conflict "George Bush's Vietnam."

Kennedy "should be a little more restrained and careful in his comments because we are at war," Powell said Tuesday on Fox News Radio's "Tony Snow Show."

Powell said debating the Iraq war was appropriate and an important part of American democracy. But, he said, "this is the also the time that we rally the nation behind the challenge that we face in Iraq and Afghanistan."

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20040407/ap...

No Colin, if anything--this is the time when rational people should be less restrained about criticism of the war.

9. I'll never forget that
I, for one, will never forget Fleischer telling us all to "watch what we say, watch what we do.

In my view, that was one of the defining moments of this presidency, and Powell is just confirming my suspicions.

How anybody could have heard that, and not been completely creeped out by it, is beyond me.

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2001/09/2001092...

Q As Commander-In-Chief, what was the President's reaction to television's Bill Maher, in his announcement that members of our Armed Forces who deal with missiles are cowards, while the armed terrorists who killed 6,000 unarmed are not cowards, for which Maher was briefly moved off a Washington television station?

MR. FLEISCHER: I have not discussed it with the President, one. I have --

Q Surely, as a --

MR. FLEISCHER: I'm getting there.

Q Surely as Commander, he was enraged at that, wasn't he?

MR. FLEISCHER: I'm getting there, Les.

Q Okay.

MR. FLEISCHER: I'm aware of the press reports about what he said. I have not seen the actual transcript of the show itself. But assuming the press reports are right, it's a terrible thing to say, and it unfortunate. And that's why -- there was an earlier question about has the President said anything to people in his own party -- they're reminders to all Americans that they need to watch what they say, watch what they do. This is not a time for remarks like that; there never is.

You're right, though -- Colin Powell now has absolutely ZERO credibility. He gave up what remaining integrity he had left when he not only gave that false testimony to the UN last year, but when he actually had them cover Guernica before he gave a press conference last year.

I get so sick of this putrid fiction that we're "at war" and therefore we all just need to shut up and go home. We're not at war with the nation of Iraq and we never were--we just invaded their country, kicked their military's ass and took over and now we say we're liberating the people of Iraq. So who the hell *are* at war withm, Colin? Al Qaeda? I must have missed that one, because we haven't done much about them recently.

41. Reminder - Hermann Goering at Nuremberg on 18th April, 1946
http://www.spartacus.schoolnet.co.uk/2WWgoring.htm

(11) Gustave Gilbert, an intelligence officer, interviewed Hermann Goering at Nuremberg on 18th April, 1946.

We got around to the subject of war again and I said that, contrary to his attitude, I did not think that the common people are very thankful for leaders who bring them war and destruction.

"Why, of course, the people don't want war," Goering shrugged. "Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece. Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship."

"There is one difference," I pointed out. "In a democracy the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives, and in the United States only Congress can declare wars."

"Oh, that is all well and good, but, voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country."

54. Teddy Roosevelt may have disagreed
Edited on Wed Apr-07-04 11:41 AM by Bandit
"The President is merely the most important among a large number of public servants. He should be supported or opposed exactly to the degree which is warranted by his good conduct or bad conduct, his efficiency or inefficiency in rendering loyal, able, and disinterested service to the nation as a whole. Therefore it is absolutely necessary that there should be full liberty to tell the truth about his acts, and this means that it is exactly as necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile. To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. Nothing but the truth should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the truth, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else."

Kennedy's speech before the Rand audience (televized on Cspan in the middle of the night) was on DOMESTIC POLICY not foreign policy. He systematically and articulately portrayed the repuke domestic program as a tissue of misrepresentation and deception.

No child left behind, an unfinanced mandate sabatoging our school system; chimp tax policy favoring the most wealthy while creating a devastating deficit; a fraudulent medicare scheme passed by bending rules, bribery and intimidation, enriching pharmaceutical companies and insurance companies at the expense of the elderly while pushing many of those already covered off the rolls or into more expensive schemes.

He didn't spend any time on Iraq and discussed it only in passing. This was a major attack on the domestic program of this regime and there has been no answer whatsoever to his indictment of their fraudulent programs based upon sound bites and flim flam.

58. Where is the domestic cabinet?
Why haven't they responded to Kennedy's speech on the deceptive and unfair domestic policies of this administration. That's what the Rand speech was about, not Iraq.

Do we even have a domestic cabinet?

59. COLON FOUL HAS NO ROOM TO CRITICIZE ANYONE!
Fuck YOU, Clono Foul! You odious, disgusting liar, disgracing yourself before the UN with that odious lie-filled dossier of fabrications and plagarism is one of the low-points of American History, and ranks up with Benedict Arnold giving the West Point Plans to the Birtish, and with the My Lai Massacre that you help cover up --- I'm sure the Bushevik Scum LOVED that you were such a loyal adept and African-American Liar.

Gave 'em cover. You aren't one of them, you know. If you ever dared oppose them, Bootlicker, in the slightest, you'd find that out lickety-split.

But having THAT much strength of character hasn't made you the Imperial Toady that you are today, has it?

This one's for you, Colon...

WE AREN'T SCARED OF YOUR BLUSTER, YOU TOADY! GO SELL IT TO THE CHI-COMS!

62. They are trying that tired old line...
Don't criticize the president because we are at war!

How convenient....Bush commits us to a war that is FUBAR from the beginning, and we can't criticize him for doing it.

Nice.

He has crossed the line. Of course Senator "Medicare Shakedown" Frist is unlikely to support the Constitution at this, or any other juncture! I suppose Spineless Tom Daschle will also bow before the mighty Colonic!

The audacity of Powell admonishing Sentor Kennedy, a man who has served his country so well and has proved to be a valiant voice for the truth and a TRUE patriot for our country and our Constitution.
I am so damned angry I echo the sentiemts expressed by the members of this forum. Powell be damned for being a traitor to the Constitution and true American values.

Powell is the worst out of all these cretins. He's a military man, he knew that they were sending troops into a no win situation. He is rsponsuble for all those who perish and maimed, American, Iraqi, "coalition." He knew better and chose to keep quiet. What a piece of shit. Oh, and by the way, Fuck you, colin old chap, may you rot in hell.

...berating and basically saying watch what you say" to an elected member of the legislative branch for what, about 30 years.

That seems to me to be a far, far larger separation of powers issue than anything that could happen with Condi, Shrub or Cheney and the non-congressional 9/11 commission.

79. Cullin' Powell
He needs to go!

Powell won't intimidate Kennedy but he statements are meant to "scare off" other powerful critics.

And if Kennedy continues with his criticisms what's going to happen?

Last week, the U.S. shuttered an Iraqi newspaper on alleged remarks it made against the colonial occupation. Now those same tactics are being tested here.

The Iraqis have clearly rejected the U.S. occupation; we Americans must do the same.
