Vacationing Bush, Advisers Hold Conference Call About Iraq
A spokesman said President George W. Bush is mourning the life of each of the U.S. troops killed in Iraq.

The president is vacationing at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, through the Easter holiday.

But spokesman Scott McClellan said Bush conducted a conference call on the Iraq situation with Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice and other top advisers. More such briefings are expected.

McClellan would not say if there were discussions about troop strength. But earlier, Rumsfeld said if military commanders seek more personnel, they will get what they need.

Meanwhile, the fighting continued to be heavy, and deadly, Wednesday in the Fallujah area of Iraq.

Edited on Wed Apr-07-04 10:16 AM by Brotherjohn
This is also perhaps the most concrete example of how callous he is, which is why I'm so outraged.

I mean, to take a vacation NOW? Can't you cancel your reservations, Georgie? You know, at your own ranch, flying with your own private jet?

The only thing worse would be if he had taken a vacation immediately after 9-11.

35. this all points to...
This vaunted political team has been screwing up left and right - joking about WMD's, the Condi mess, vacationing while Rome burns...so many things are being badly handled from a public relations standpoint that if just reinforces my belief that to them, none of this matters because they already have the election stolen. Otherwise, it just makes zero sense to go on vacation during what already has been and will continue to be a gruesome week for our troops.

Bush has described playful plans for his days at the ranch, which was finished in the spring. Talking to members of the agricultural youth group FFA last week, Bush joked that he looked forward to "seeing the cows. Occasionally they talk to me — being the good listener that I am."

61. Byrd says it all as usual - link ...
Edited on Wed Apr-07-04 01:15 PM by twilight
from the NY Times source:

http://www.nytimes.com/aponline/national/AP-US-Iraq.html?hp

<<CRAWFORD, Texas -- President Bush was briefed Wednesday on the spiraling violence and U.S. casualties in Iraq where American forces are facing the heaviest fighting since the fall of Baghdad a year ago.

Bush, at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, through Easter Sunday, got an update on fighting by U.S. Marines in the Sunni Muslim stronghold of Fallujah. Bush spoke via a secure video conference call with his national security advisers. The call was to have included Gen. John Abizaid, commander of the Central Command which has jurisdiction in Iraq, and L. Paul Bremer, the top U.S. civilian in Iraq.>>

Byrd:

<<On Capitol Hill, a senior Democrat, Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia, urged caution.

"Surely I am not the only one who hears echoes of Vietnam in this development," .25 said. "Surely, the administration recognizes that increasing the U.S. troop presence in Iraq will only suck us deeper, deeper into the maelstrom, into the quicksand of violence that has become the hallmark of that unfortunate, miserable country."

"Starkly put, at this juncture, more U.S. forces in Iraq equates more U.S. targets in Iraq," Byrd said. "The harsh reality is this: one year after the fall of Baghdad, the United States should not be casting about for a formula to bring additional U.S. troops to Iraq. We should instead be working toward an exit strategy.">>

WE NEED TO GET THE PHUCK OUTTA IRAQ ASAP!!!

WAKE UP *!!!!!!!!

i don't understand how he has the nerve to fly out to texas when we have young troops (who happen to be sons, daughters, husbands and wives, sisters and brothers, and mommies and daddies) killed every day.

but, isn't it fabulous? he's teleconferencing each day to keep on top of the situation. shouldn't someone tell him it doesn't look good?

if he must go for R&R, why not camp david? he's a lazy, spoiled brat.
