4. If this statement is true:
"A person familiar with the investigation said it is believed Robert used his father's Glock."
Then I would say "There goes the argument that only police and the military should be allowed to own weapons"

40. How's this for a goofy comparison
I graduated from Millard in 1984. same school but when I went there some of the kids actually brought their shotguns to school in the back of their cars so they could go across the street to a huge cornfield and hunt pheasant before school. They locked the guns in their cars before coming to class and no one thought much of it.

Same school , much more deadly weapon and no deaths (except the pheasants)

The problem isn't the guns. ( to paraphrase Clinton) It's the people stupid

8. Tragic...
only compounded by the constant harangue of those who want MORE guns, LESS controls, NO regulation.

I hope the Principal and their assistant Principal recovery fully.

21. Whom exactly?
"constant harangue of those who want MORE guns, LESS controls, NO regulation."

Whom exactly is it that wants NO regulations? If as you say, its a "constant harangue", it shouldn't be hard to show some evidence.

OTOH, even the eeeevul nra isnt for "NO regulation".

Some clarification may be in order.

11. This is a very sad situation.
The father was on his way to the school when he heard that it was his son.
My secretary and her husband are friends with this family and they are good people.
We as a society need to do more for our children so they don't feel driven to hurt themselves or others.

19. I think people should and can have enough compassion
for all the victims, the people who were shot, their family and friends, the family and friends of this young man who hurt others and took his own life and for a young soul who felt he had no options.
Instead of blame, insults and using this tragedy to push agendas, maybe we could look for solutions to help all our children and young adults have more hope.

to come out. It is hard to know what solutions we need until the problem is defined.

A school security camera had caught the 17-year-old senior — who transferred to the school this past fall — driving across a school football field. Assistant Principal Vicki Kaspar informed him of his penalty: a 19-day suspension.

Butler's father is Robert Butler Sr., an Omaha police detective. Omaha police officials released no details on the handgun that the young Butler used, though The World-Herald has been told it was his father's Glock .40, a common police service weapon.

35. He was unhappy about a 19-day suspension for driving across an atheltic field.
Nineteen days, I have to say, seems like a long time for that, and for a first-time offense. Nothing justifies the shooting, of course.

36. Maybe he was being bullied by the jocks.
And that is why he wanted to damage an athletic field.
New kid in school and all that entails.
We may never know.
