http://www.whotv.com/Global/story.asp?S=1765838Norfolk, Virginia-AP -- Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld says if commanders in Iraq think they need more troops, all they have to do is ask -- and they'll "get what they need."
At an appearance in Norfolk, Virginia, today, Rumsfeld said he and President Bush often ask commanders in Iraq if they have enough troops. He says the administration follows the advice from those commanders.
U-S forces are now engaged in combat with a militia loyal to a Shiite cleric and other resistance forces. A military source says generals think they have enough forces now -- but want to know what's available if the violence spreads.
Rumsfeld says there are about 135-thousand American troops in Iraq. He calls that "an unusually high level."
