Durbin: The $1.1 Trillion Omnibus Spending Bill Is ‘Exactly The Number’ McConnell Asked For
Source: thinkprogress

Senate Republicans have spent the last few days acting shocked and outraged over this year’s omnibus spending bill, which would fund the government through next Sept. 30. Republicans are threatening to derail the lame duck session and shutdown the government over the “disrespectful” measure.
Overhearing McConnell’s tantrum, Senate Majority Whip Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) came to the floor. Acknowledging that the omnibus does indeed cost over a trillion dollars, Durbin offered one small helpful reminder to assuage McConnell’s “horror” over the figure: that $1.1 trillion number was “exactly the amount” he asked for himself.
DURBIN: I’m a member of the Appropriations Committee. And I remember what happened…this is the reality…It’s true it’s over a trillion dollars. In fact, it’s $1.1 trillion in this bill. But what hasn’t been said by Senator McConnell and Senator Kyl, that’s exactly the amount that they asked for! Senator McConnell came to the Senate Appropriations Committee and said Republicans will not support this bill unless you bring the spending down to $1.108 trillion. That is exactly what we bring down to the floor to be considered.

4. Did you learn a little lesson, Sen. Durbin?
You negotiated in good faith. You gave McConnell and Kyl precisely what they asked for, and when year pearl of an agreement is made public, they turned on you and trampled both your pearls and you underfoot. Does that give you an inkling of the type of swine you're dealing with?

18. I don't wish to jump to a conclusion
I'd like to hear directly from Dick Durbin just what he was thinking when he made this atrocious deal (though I never will), and whether or not his most recent experience will inform his future actions. Or will next time be the time when he really kicks that football?

21. No, they likely know more
The problem is that they need to find a way that a few Republicans are convinced that a bill is in their interest to pass. Otherwise - it does not pass.

They do not have the luxury to just write on a Democratic board that "Rethugs" are bad!

12. Probably...a Chicago Thing...and yes...Schakowsy...and others..
So much "smoke and mirrors"...we always wait for them to swoop in at Last Minute on Bills that are so Crucial...and then the "cave-in" begins. Compromise...good for American Taxpayers...it's the best we could do...you know it REALLY IS he BEST WE COULD DO! But...we wanted to make sure you "Liberals" knew we "Gave it Our Best Shot."

Been here since 2001 on DU ...seen it all go down so many times...the same way over and over.

What's left to believe in the LEFT? They grind us down...throwing scraps to the "dogs under the table/bus."

19. Sh! It ruins their rant
Not to mention he likely spent many days in Chicago over his life.

I sometimes wonder why there are so many here who would trash a man, who has a life long liberal record - yet fall for anyone who is angry. Though I think there are few elected officials other than Grayson and maybe Kucinich.

13. Pelosi should yank the tax cut bill from the floor of the House right now.
Until after the spending bill is passed in the Senate. Both the House and Senate should stay in session every single day until January 3 if the Omnibus bill is not passed.
