WikiLeaks cables: US proposed counter-terrorism centre in Barcelona Fears that Spain had become 'major logistical hub' for terrorists and 'al-Qaida target' led US to plan centre in 2007, say cables Associated Press guardian.co.uk, Saturday 11 December 2010 21.07 GMT
The US grew so concerned about the possibility of an Islamist terrorist attack in Spain in 2007 that it proposed setting up a counter-terrorism centre in the country's second-largest city, according to leaked US embassy cables.
The three cables say the US planned the "counterterrorism, anti-crime and intelligence centre" at its consulate in Barcelona.
The goal was to "combat the target-rich environment of terrorist and criminal activities centred in the region," which has a "presence of over one million Muslims," according to a 2007 cable.
In March 2004, a total of 191 people were killed and more than 1,800 wounded in bombing attacks on commuter trains in Madrid. Islamic militants claimed responsibility.
