Powerless Cruise Ship Entering San Diego Bay Thursday Morning
BY KYLA CALVERT
November 10, 2010
SAN DIEGO — The cruise ship stranded off the coast of Southern California since Monday will be towed into San Diego’s downtown harbor Thursday morning. Getting the ship’s passengers back to land has not taken as long as initially expected.

The 3,299 passengers and 1,167 crewmembers aboard the cruise ship Splendor were expected to be waiting outside the San Diego Bay before daybreak.

The ship has been powerless since Monday, when a generator malfunction began a fire in one of the engine rooms. Two tugboats have been towing the ship and three more will help maneuver it to dock.

No, they are not going faster, but of course unless one is following multiple sources...

But hey, PR is PR is PR...

On the plus side, the nightmare for the passengers will be soon over,

and a Chief Engineer better find a new job... and the same goes for the Captain.

Oh and our media will mostly not recognize this... props for the MEXICAN assets involved. (Somebody has to)

2. ...not taken as long as initially expected.
The initial reports I read (on Monday) said that it would be 24 hours after the tugs (expected in the early afternoon) arrived.

The spin-cycle goes so quickly, that it is hard to keep up. Also can be surprisingly hard to retrieve yesterday's news -

Truly, I know nothing of the big new cruise ships (except that they are the ugliest vessels afloat) but am surprised to learn that a fire in "one of the" engine rooms would disable the ship's entire propulsion system.

13. I think it was an "explosion", not a "fire".

3. Good for Them
I am sure that it has been an "experience" for all involved. Hope that they are well cared for by the cruise line (both passengers and crew).

4. I'm glad they got rescued
but I never could understand why anyone would go on vacation with 4,500 other people within a floating petrie dish.

15. Boy, me neither! That sounds like hell on earth.
I don't understand why people think those cruises are so great. However, I keep hearing that people like them because they can eat all day and night. I truly don't get it. I'm interested in a barge trip of 8 days down the Seine that is offered by Road Scholar, but I'm even wary of a river barge...however, at least it is much smaller and goes into interesting ports in France...AND the trip includes 4 days in Paris...

5. It's a nightmare to be stuck on a cruise ship off of Southern California for a few days?
This is the best diversionary heartwarming horseshit story they could come up with the last couple of days.

10. without toilets (for a time), showers, hot food, power...that's like camping in a soda can
a cruise ship without power is a very unpleasant experience.

11. They docked at the passenger terminal.
Cheap asses will still pay for the emergency docking fees. Likely NASSCO went oh hell no. And yes they did, it is called shore to ship power.
