Olympic agrees to inspect pipeline in South Seattle
Company accedes to city's demands, Nickels says

By KATHY MULADY
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTER

The Olympic Pipe Line Co. has agreed to dig up and inspect sections of pipeline in Seattle in response to the city's demands, Mayor Greg Nickels said yesterday.

The company will excavate the section of line that runs past a child care center at New Holly, and another section, about 50 feet away from the Ferdinand P-patch on Beacon Hill, according to the Mayor's Office.

"This is a welcome first step, but it's only half of what we need," the mayor said. "These visual inspections of potential weak spots are a part of the safety measures I have demanded as proof that the pipeline is safe."

The line also runs past two elementary schools. Nickels said he still wants proof the entire line is safe or he will shut it down Aug. 26. Federal officials say the mayor lacks the authority to close the pipeline.

1. It's about time
After those three kids were killed up in Bellingham, you'd *think* Olympic would be willing to do about anything for safety ... but apparently profits triumph yet again over lives.

2. there was an article a few weeks ago
Nickels threatened to shut down all pipeline in the city. Olympic claimed he didn't have the legal authority, but as it turns out, he aparently did, and Olympic is finally complying.

This is just for a TEST, something I think Olympic would do on a regular basis anyway...
