State Sen. Jorge Luis Garcia, an Arizona Corporation Commission candidate, died Friday at age 57.

Garcia's campaign chairman, Tony Bracamonte, confirmed his death Friday evening but would not comment further.

Garcia, a Democrat and Senate assistant minority leader, had served as state senator of District 27, which includes parts of downtown Tucson, since 2003. He was also a member of the state House of Representatives from 1993 to 1997.

.

On his Corporation Commission campaign website, Garcia said he would "fight for the interests of workers, consumers, and the environment" and "continue Arizona's policy for generating electricity from solar and other renewable sources."

Garcia left behind a wife, three children and four grandchildren.

This is a very sad loss and Leaves the Arizona Democratic party with only one Corp Commision candidate. Garcia was only 57 and also was Minority Leader.

1. I may still vote for him
Voters select two candidates from the ballot.

State Elections Director Amy Bjelland said Garcia's name remains on the ballot for next month's election. In fact, early ballots already have been mailed.
She said if Garcia were to win one of the two seats, it would be up the governor to choose a replacement, who would have to be a Democrat like Garcia.

Not that if Gov Brewer is making the choice, she would really have much difficulty finding an anti-consumer blue-dog.

The other alternative would be one of the two Green candidates. The two Republicans and one Libertarian are not.

2. Governor Terry Goddard would chose a good replacement
That's why I'm still voting Garcia, because even a dead Democrat is better than any republican in this state.
