US never took peace adviser seriously
Source: SMH

NEW YORK: The former US president, George Bush, never took the Israeli-Palestinian peace talks seriously and, with his aides, privately mocked the efforts of the top peace negotiator, James Wolfensohn, the Australian's new memoir says.

...

Mr Indyk told Mr Wolfensohn that the public displays of access he was given to Mr Bush, the vice-president, Dick Cheney, and his cabinet ''were all show. I was never a serious player.''

Mr Wolfensohn said that when he accepted Mr Bush's offer he never doubted he was being treated seriously, but he eventually left the job enraged at how he had been treated by top US officials, including the secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice.

Mr Wolfensohn writes that, after working seven months on a peace deal, he was ''dumbstruck'' when he learnt while he was in Jerusalem in late 2005 that Dr Rice was also in the city, in a room in the King David Citadel Hotel, secretly negotiating with both sides.

Mr Wolfensohn, enraged, went to the hotel and collared Elliott Abrams, Mr Bush's deputy national security adviser, telling him: ''Look Elliott, I think you are a son of (a) bitch.''

When Dr Rice appeared ''at her most imperious'' and challenged him for speaking in such terms to Mr Abrams, Mr Wolfensohn told her: ''Don't tell me that I am a trusted adviser.''

7. In a just world, Elliot Abrams would just be getting out of prison...
...for his crimes against humanity in Central America. Instead, he was a player in the Bush administration.

3. Disaster Capitalism will not be stopped. Wars must never cease.
The Republican mantra is profits over people, so war is a good thing as it generates profits.

4. Hon matsu kukyo to - consistency from beginning to end. The surprise would have been
if they DID take it seriously. Peace was the anathema of their goals.

8. It's difficult to sincerely promote peace if your subconscious end game is global destruction.
What person would repair their home if they were certain of imminent fire?

Thanks for the thread, sabra.
