Hurricane Karl Leaves 6 Dead, 8 Missing in Mexico

VERACRUZ, Mexico – Six people were killed, eight are listed as missing and tens of thousands of others were forced from their homes in rural and urban areas by Hurricane Karl in Mexico’s Veracruz state, officials said Sunday.

Karl made landfall Friday just north of the port city of Veracruz as a Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 195 kph (120 mph), but it later dissipated over the high mountains of southern Mexico, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center said in its last public advisory on the system.

The heavy rains from the storm caused rivers and drainage canals to overflow their banks in the tourist destinations of Veracruz and Boca del Rio, as well as in the nearby cities of Medellin, Cotaxtla and Jamapa.

As usual if it don't happen in the US...

Anyhoo, watching the local news on this. The Mexican Red Cross (unlike ours) has penetrated deep into the affected area and triaged people to evac, as they don't have enough transport vehicles for the size of the emergency. The Mexican Navy is doing the same, as well as the Army.

Oh and we have over 50K who have been affected.

But as usual our media covering any foreign press? But why?

2. It is ugly, but nothing like Katrina
and it is covered, well. The Official Briefs are so damn detailed... they are almost boringly, highly technical detailed. (Me, trained in disaster services, but I don't have to guess where the worst damage is, like Katrina... where indeed I was pouring over... I am not shitting you... National Geographic Maps)

This is Mexico after the quake... 25 years on... the civil defense system works.

4. You welcome
they are raising funds, and the usual stuff that usually goes to this.

I know on the way out, I will leave my change at the Red Cross box...

If they don't use it for this, they will use it for an ambulance, or hospital equipment or whatever.

What had me going was... the American Red Cross could have done exactly this (drive in in very high trucks) into the Astrodome and convention center with water, and take people out. And yes, I have had that same discussion with ARC personnel, who usually go you don't get it, until I tell them what I used to do for fun.

Granted, they would have had to wait for 48 hours, due to the level of the water, but 48 hours on... unless I was not reading maps correctly... and definitely by day three or four.
