Drunk shouts 'terrorists,' urinates on mosque rugs
Source: MSNBC

NEW YORK — In the latest in a spate of anti-Muslim incidents over the last two days, an intoxicated man entered a mosque in Queens on Wednesday evening and proceeded to urinate on prayer rugs, New York police officials said.

The man, identified as Omar Rivera, reportedly shouted anti-Muslim epithets and called worshippers who had gathered for evening prayer “terrorists.” One witness told the New York Post the man was “very clearly intoxicated” and had a beer bottle in his hand at the time.

“He stuck up his middle finger and cursed at everyone,” Mustapha Sadouki, who was at the mosque at the time, said. “He calls us terrorists, yet he comes into our mosque and terrorizes other people.”

Rivera has been charged with criminal trespassing.

25. No, but they will trot it out later today once they've had their
staff meetings to decide how they're going to shape it so it's really the Muslins fault. Witness their performance yesterday with the guy who knifed the cabbie - silence at first but by the time it got to Laura Ingraham they were all singing the tune that 'it couldn't have been anti-muslim sentiment, but just because the guy has a drinking problem'. Wait and see on this one...

Yesterday Mr Pataki said: "That's why the mosque, the cultural centre should not be built there." He said that those backing the project to build the Park51 two blocks from the site of the September 11 attacks were "deliberately provoking emotions".

83. with assumptions being made about the name "Omar".
What would they be? That the name is commonly used in Muslim countries? Or countires previously conquered by Muslims, and their past colonies?

from Wikipedia:

Omar or Omer is a surname or given name with various origins:
Variant spelling of Umar, Arabic, Amir al-Mu'minin
Omar (Bible), Hebrew, Biblical and Muslim origin meaning "flourishing", "long-lived", "eloquent and gifted speaker"
A variant of Hindi Amar (from Sanskrit=Amara; a + mara = to die)= immortal, long-lived
A less popular Surname in Hindu Upper Caste Banias : See Omar
A fine grained stone with a bubble in it

Oh look! Look at the very 1st one listed. And the second one!

29. There was a similar incident early Friday morning in Miami. It hasn't gotten much coverage.
Student urinates on church

At around 1 a.m. Friday, officers on bike patrol reportedly observed a male, later identified as Miami University sophomore Jacob Pleban, staggering in the alley behind Oxford United Methodist Church.

According to police reports, the officer followed Pleban, 19, to the corridor leading to the church’s back door where he proceeded to urinate on the building. The officer reportedly identified himself as police and asked if the male knew he was urinating on the Methodist church.

According to police reports, it was apparent Pleban did not know what he was doing, but he replied, “I’m Catholic.” Pleban reportedly had the odor of an alcoholic beverage on his breath, wobbled on his feet and slurred his words. Pleban was charged with public urination, disorderly conduct and underage intoxication....

62. It doesn't sound similar to me
A drunk urinating on a church wall all alone in a back alley versus a drunk walking into a place of worship full of people, insulting them, then urinating in front of them. In the Miami case, it sounds like the church was incidental while in the New York case antagonizing worshipers was the whole point.

How about "indecent exposure?" Or some kind of environmental infraction?

I knew a fellow once who was jogging in the park when he had to relieve himself. He thought no one would see him and went into some bushes to pee. Well, there was someone who saw him and a cop nearby, and he was arrested for "indecent exposure." And that was outside in a park...

You don't have to ask anyone to leave.

If I tell you "You may hang out in my living room, but you are not allowed to sit on my couch" then when you sit on my couch you become a trespasser.

40. Little Wonder that we get attacked.
Taken out of context, we insult and provoke others to fight. Then when they get pissed off enough to strike out, we cower behind our innocent soldiers to fight the fight their hate and ignorance caused.

I am seriously embarassed by our stupid image!

Same with philosophy... blinds the weak and makes strong men dangerous. Been doing it for thousands of years. Oh, and politics, too.

66. I really think It's time for President Obama to show some leadership and come out
and denounce all of this hateful rhetoric. Maybe he can give a speech about religious tolerance, like he gave about race a few years ago. He along with other elected leaders in the party, should let the Muslim community know that they are standing with them.

73. "War on Terrorism" Actually War on Islam/Muslims
Edited on Thu Aug-26-10 03:38 PM by YankeeLeft7x
If anyone hasn't noticed yet, this so-called "War on Terrorism" is actually a War on Islam/Muslims.

Sad to inform all the good people here, but, the likes of Debbie Wasserman Schultz is also one of those Democrats who has shown an intolerance and hostile attitude towards the mosque being built in New York City. She expressed her anti-mosque views and intolerance on Larry King Live Tuesday night. Here is the exchange between King and Schultz:

KING: Congresswoman Schultz, do you think that Muslim situation in New York will be a national issue?

SCHULTZ: Um, I really don't think it will be a national issue. I think what it boils down to is it is a case of just because you can doesn't mean you should. I think the leadership of the mosque and that Muslim community in that area of New York City would be well served to sit down with the leadership in New York and in that community, and work together to build some consensus on an alternative site.

Key words by Congresswoman Schultz is an "alternative site," and not to build it there. Again, this is patronizing behavior and a belittling attitude and one wonders why this violence breaks out?

Anyone who participates in the bashing of Muslims/Islam by vast and gross generalizations feeds into this type of behavior, hence, the negative view of "American democracy" and "America's "great" freedom" as its sold to the rest of the world, even as citizens in other nations no longer buy those American myths.

Yes, the likes of Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, etc. are also culpable and share implicit blame here, as well as, the superficial media which never lets a chance go by, not before asking anyone on the TV, "so, what do you think of the mosque situation, in NYC?"

The likes of Howard Dean and Debbie Wasserman Schultz have joined the ranks of Newt Gingrich, Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Ari Fleischer and Ann Coulter in their overt hostility towards the Arab/Muslim commumity in the good ole USA, where "freedom for all" is in great peril.

Have a Very Nice Day!

78. Just an Extension of the U.S. National Policy
Edited on Thu Aug-26-10 03:55 PM by YankeeLeft7x
"Mr. Rivera's uninvited micturation was not an act of national policy"

No, just merely an extension of "national policy" from the Patriot Act to profiling Muslims in mosques as the FBI does regularly, and let's not forget Abu Ghraib and all the other detention and secret sites around the globe where Muslims are tortured.

The U.S. has created the cultural conditions which not only targets Muslims and the Arab community but gives license for the likes of Mr. Rivera to act as he did.

I will stand by my original post on this matter, as many Muslims and Arabs share the view that this "war on terror" is directly aimed at them.

I shall not have to remind anyone here of the Muslim bashing by America's national leaders from President Bush calling the war on terror "a crusade" to Retired General Boykin's animus against Islam.

Have a Very Nice Day!

I was born in America but now a Canadian citizen.

I am ashamed to say I am American.....I feel so sorry for America and what is has become.

Any sane person would want to leave it, like those did leave Germany prior to WWII.

Canada I stand on guard for thee.

We accept diversity.

My little son at 8 when we went to NJ to visit relatives in a small town asked where all the people of color were.
He was so used to having the United Nations in his third grade.

I weep for you America.

Liberals I think have been too complacent with the excuse of "we don't know which of them are really extremists." But it's time to stand by Muslims regardless of their beliefs.
