10 killed in Afghan bomb attacks
(AFP) – 1 hour ago

KABUL — Three NATO soldiers were killed Tuesday in Taliban-style bomb attacks in Afghanistan, while separate bombs killed seven civilians including at least three women and a child, officials said.

Two foreign soldiers were killed in an attack in eastern Afghanistan, a troubled region which sees regular Taliban attacks, the NATO force said in a statement.

Another died in a similar attack on Tuesday, in the west of the country. The nationalities of the casualties were not disclosed, in line with NATO policy.

Most of the troops in eastern Afghanistan are Americans, while an Italian contingent is based in the western province of Herat.

1. Too late to be an LBN OP: "Insurgents assassinate Afghan official, policeman"
(AP) – 14 hours ago

KABUL, Afghanistan — Insurgents assassinated an Afghan government official and a policeman Monday in western Afghanistan, and five civilians died when their vehicle hit a roadside bomb elsewhere in the west, officials said.

Two insurgents on a motorcycle shot and killed the government official in a bazaar in the Gulistan district of Farah province, NATO said. The policeman returned fire, but was killed by the insurgents. NATO did not identify the government official.

In neighboring Herat province, five members of one family were killed and two others were wounded in a blast after their vehicle hit a mine, said Lal Mohammad Omarzai, deputy governor of Shindand district.

Also on Monday, NATO said an al-Qaida operative was among those killed in an airstrike Sunday on a pickup truck that was fleeing the site of a gunfight with police in Kunduz province in northern Afghanistan. The military coalition previously said that two insurgents were killed.

Officials seize truck with 37,000 lbs of explosives

August 16th, 2010

Kandahar police have seized a truck carrying 17,000 kg (37,478 lbs) of explosives skillfully placed in boxes marked paint and pickles, authorities said.

The truck, with Pakistani license plates, was seized by Kandahar customs agents on Sunday as it came in from the Quetta province in Pakistan, officials said.

"Our enemies use various techniques with the purpose of destroying our country, but our alert police have been defusing their plans, as you see from today's good example," said General Mohammad Shafiq said Sunday.
