Danish naval team sent to 'take on' Greenpeace ship
Special forces to confront vessel targeting 'dangerous' deep sea oil drilling sites in wake of BP oil rig disaster
The Guardian, Monday 16 August 2010

A special forces naval team has been sent to confront a Greenpeace ship which is on a mission to target "dangerous" deep sea oil drilling sites, the environmental group claimed yesterday.

The Esperanza left London last week to highlight problems with oil that go "far beyond" the disaster at BP's Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico.

Greenpeace has not revealed which of 10 deep water drilling locations, including Brazil, the Arctic, Nigeria and the Atlantic west of Shetland, it plans to target but has pledged to confront the industry head-on over its "reckless" pursuit of oil.

The group said the Danish government had dispatched a special forces navy team on the Faroe Islands to "take on" its ship, believing it was heading for the area.

2. I don't like Green Peace.
It's not like a left leaning country like Denmark is neo-fascists and instead if Green Peace would stop breaking the law then you wouldn't see a country like Denmark sending ships to enforce the law. Sure, protest if that's what you want to do but you make us all look bad when you break the law so protest with in the limits of the law.

8. What?
Wow - yeah you those Dutchies with their lefty ways - you know anything at all about the Dutch ?
Yeah they are liberal - they take drugs and like porn - they have a history of extreme domination and far right wing attitudes.

Lets not forget that the Dutch have a very embedded deal with Royal Dutch Shell - not many are aware of the complicated ownership arrangements of this beast.

Dont let your stereo-types of Tulips and happy times get in the way of reality - I know its hard being an American an all.

14. *facepalms* you do know that DENMARK is a different country from THE NETHERLANDS don't you?
Dear god the article is about DENMARK!!!

it's brain dead remarks like that that make me embarrassed to be an american!

IF the topic at had were about the Netherlands, then you would have some salient points, aside from the fact that the current coalition in parliament is very conservative and racist (wilder's party almost has a majority (plurality)!!! (33 seats)

That side look at a fucking map once in a while!!

I wonder how many Dutch people would leave too, if that happened.

10. So, these greenpeace ships are all sailboats right?
Is that a wind powered helicopter?

Look to the beam in thine own eye. As consumers, we enable this shit. Greenpeace too. If we weren't guzzling it down greedily, there wouldn't be any money in it for them.

11. Seriously?
How can anybody honestly expect GP to come up with a wind powered helicopter to avoid burning fuel? What a ridiculous standard. The point is that their efforts (which require burning fuel) help the environment through their actions much more than it hurts. How can that point be missed by any competent person?

17. Actually, GP is moving to biodiesel
for ships and vehicles. Not sure if they have completed the move, but THAT is effort I can appreciate.

My original point is moot, and has been addressed by GP.

21. Cool, thanks for that.
I imagine GP might have issues finding bio fuels in ports throughout the world though. I just think their efforts have a far greater impact that offsets their carbon footprint, if you know what I mean.

20. Is there a source for this other than Greenpeace itself? Has anyone asked the Danes?
I don't like the rhetoric - "target", "take on" - but some independent observation/video of remote deep water platforms would be good to see. However, I'm not sure how many of the most dangerous (mal)practices would be visible from a nearby ship, except maybe active dumping and spilling. The BP platform probably looked perfectly normal until it blew...
