Pryor Blocked From U.S. Appeals Court by Democrats
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGAFL06WSID.html

WASHINGTON (AP) - Senate Republicans on Thursday lost their third attempt this week to push one of President Bush's judicial nominees through the Senate, with Democrats blocking conservative Alabama Attorney General William Pryor from the U.S. Appeals Court.

Pryor could not get the 60 votes needed from the 100-member Senate to win a seat on the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, leading Republicans to immediately denounce the third Democratic filibuster this week.

Pryor only got 53 votes in the Senate, which is split with 51 Republicans, 48 Democrats and one independent senator, Jim Jeffords of Vermont. The only Democrats to vote for him were Sens. Zell Miller of Georgia and Ben Nelson of Nebraska.

"A majority of Democrats has made it clear to a majority of senators that they are determined to deny the Senate the right to vote and to deny a nominee what he or she deserves, an up-or-down vote," Senate Judiciary Chairman Orrin Hatch said.

Democrats also have blocked Texas judge Priscilla Owen and District of Columbia lawyer Miguel Estrada from being confirmed this week.

1. YES!
Jesus, if Bush would only nominate a halfway-sane justice, they might actually get a vote. I suspect this is to tire out the Senate so they'll capitulate when he nominates "moderate" Alberto Gonzales to the Supreme Court.

8. Many have been confirmed
It's only these wingbuts who are being blocked. And rightly so.

The Boy George should realize he isn't going to win these.

ACLU Challenges Alabama Ban
On Use of Sex Devices and "Marital Aids"

http://archive.aclu.org/news/n072998a.html

Under penalties of up to $10,000 in fines, one year's jail time or "hard labor," the law prohibits as obscene the sale, production, or distribution of "any device designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs." The law, passed by the legislature in April, went into effect on July 1. The principal sponsor of the law was Senator Tom Butler of Madison.

The complaint names as defendants Bill Pryor, Alabama Attorney General, and Tim Morgan, District Attorney for Madison County -- the two officials responsible for prosecuting violations of the law in Madison County.

14. Bush has appointed a few moderates, but he's using these ideologues...
Nothing like campaign time and the commericial comes out:

'Democrat so-n-so doesn't support "Women/Catholics/Hispanics/Fillintheblank" because they consistantly refused to give so-n-so, a "Women/Catholics/Hispanics/Fillintheblank" an opportunity to serve on the bench.

Mind you, Estrada, Owens, Kuhl and Prior are not represetative of their group of people. We knew dozens of hispanic, women and catholic groups that came out against these nominations.

But these republican campaign commericials will NOT tell that story, nor will they tell of all the judges that we did approve from Bush's selection.

The Bush regime KNOWS that these judges will never get on the bench, but they are future campaign fodder to help win votes from folks who really don't follow issue like judges on the bench. I can almost guarentee if you live in an area that is heavily hispanic you'll see this commericial over and over again to appeal to hispanic voters.

7. Here's a thought...
call me crazy, but what if this idiotic administration actually nominated a moderate for judge?

Then, they could bitch all they wanted if the Dems didn't let the moderate have an up or down vote.

But when you put an avowed conservative up, the Dems have every right to block just like the repubs did when Clinton was president.

11. Interesting look at Zell Miller’s voting record…
Even though it represents only years `00 & `01, I would labor to guess that `02 & `03 might be very similar to the previous two.

ZELL MILLER'S VOTING RECORD

2000 Miller voted with Democrats: 25%
Miller voted with President Clinton: 100%
2001 Miller voted with Democrats: 42%
Miller voted with President Bush: 82%

He’s conservative…duh…and he votes with the Pres. regardless of party. Kinda has the appearance of a presidential fetish.

12. On Television it said Bill Nelson, not Ben
I know the news article said it was Ben, but on CSPAN it said Bill. I know both have voted against the Democrats on nominees in the past, but I was pretty sure that Ben Nelson had come out against Pryor.

13. Sorry, it was Ben
I wish Ben Nelson and Zell Miller would back the Democrats on one of these candidates. I'm sure if Zell Miller wouldn't even back it, Senators like Gordon Smith, Olympia Snowe, and Lincoln Chafee would consider voting against the senator. Wouldn't it be great to have Bush turned down by members of his own party?
