60 votes in place, Dems ready to extend jobs money
Source: AP

WASHINGTON – With a new face and a 60th vote for breaking a Republican filibuster, Senate Democrats are preparing to restore jobless checks for 2.5 million people whose benefits ran out during a congressional standoff over deficit spending. President Barack Obama says, "It's time to do what's right."

But first, Obama and his Democratic allies are pressing for maximum political advantage, blaming Republicans for an impasse that halted unemployment checks averaging $309 a week for those whose eligibility had expired.

Obama launched a fresh salvo on Monday, demanding that the Senate act on the legislation — after a vote already had been scheduled for Tuesday — and blasting Republicans for the holdup.

"The same people who didn't have any problem spending hundreds of billions of dollars on tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans are now saying we shouldn't offer relief to middle-class Americans," Obama said.

3. Hit them hard
keep up on them, keep telling the public the Republicans would rather send $$ to Iraq and Afghanistan, cut taxes for rich, and keep Corporate welfare, rather then helping the middle class...

7. Ben Nelson for one.
I heard that Snowe, Collins, and Brown were voting for it.

8. Scott Brown has turned into a grave disappointment, hasn't he?
I mean, the Republicans of this country went to all that time and trouble to get someone in there who would block Nancy Pelosi (who cares that she works at the other end of the building, that's who Scott Brown was sent to block) and they spent all that hard-earned money, and here he is blocking Republican filibusters.

I feel SOOOOOOO sorry the R's wasted their money.

10. I hope this is a reminder to folks on this site
why electing Democrats to the House and Senate is so important.

A lot of people are hurting and UI may be the ONLY thing keeping them from being completely destitute. While I've been lucky to have a job for over a month, I realize also how tenuous it is and feel like I could lose it any day. My perspective within a month has changed and I feel just as nervous as I did a few months ago.

12. Not all Democrats have been reliable votes on this one.
Two Republicans, Sens. Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe of Maine, voted yea, giving the bill 59 votes. However, Nebraska Democrat Ben Nelson voted nay. (The final vote shows only 58 in favor because Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) was required to vote against the bill so that another vote could take place in the future.)
