Louisiana Humane Society director files lawsuit against BP

The report alleges that BP violated the parish animal cruelty codes and the ordinances that prohibit the exposure of animals to poison, the avoidance of mistreatment of animals, and the littering of waterways, writes Micheal Perry on Facebook.

Dorson was quoted as saying, "I realize this is a modest legal action in light of the crisis, but I hope it has a significant impact. Every time we see an oil-covered animal and contaminants in the water we are witnessing a crime and it should be reported."

After two trips to the barrier islands in Barataria Bay off Grand Isle, Dorson set up "Operation Here to Help," a program of the Humane Society of Louisiana, with the goal of surveying the affected areas and providing coordinates to state and federal agencies. The program says that "although red tape still prevents us from handling oiled wildlife ourselves, we can provide critical information to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries so that they can most effectively mobilize their extremely limited manpower."

Dorson and others took photos of oiled birds which were included in the police report, along with other pertinent documentation.
