BAGHDAD (Reuters) - A U.S. soldier was killed and two were wounded when their vehicle hit a land mine on the road to the American base at Baghdad International Airport on Thursday, the U.S. commander in Iraq (news - web sites) said.

"About two hours ago a Humvee hit a land mine, going toward Baghdad airport," Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez, commander of ground forces in Iraq, told a news conference.

The attack brings to 52 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in guerrilla attacks since Washington declared major combat over on May 1.

2. Sigh...And again
My first thought was that this is a dupe BUT--the other story says "Northern Iraq" and "50 killed since May 1".

It sucketh mightily.

if nothing else, it proves the worth of the Humvee as a vehicle. How many times have we seen a humvee hit a mine, or othe explosive device and have at least half of the troops inside survive? remarkable.

OOPS: on edit, more info says it was an APC, not a humvee.

why don't they sweep this fucking road every day?

17. HELL OF A HIT ON APC
Did you see that it must have been blown 10 feet in the air.

I saw humvee somewhere else too. But the ramp on the back is definitely an M-113.

Lots of "WOUNDED " here.

3. Now, how much can we believe about "cause of death"
these days......

The WH has to work real hard to conceal that it is a guerrilla war over there...... so if they can, do you think they are going to tell us deaths are accidents vs. from attacks????

**cause it seems like there have been more accidents than attacks in the last few days......

4. "Bring em on"
He got what he has asked for. Is this really his strong suit, foreign policy/war on terrorism? While you are on vacation at the pig farm Mr Bush I hope you are thinking of this:

Because they rejected a United Nations-supervised administration of post-Hussein Iraq, the US and Britain needlessly shoulder most of the legal responsibility for the success or failure of the administration and reconstruction of Iraq. No wonder other nations and groupings, such as India, Pakistan and Nato, have rejected Washington's appeal for troops. Why risk the liabilities of a military occupation under current conditions, especially when a simple Security Council mandate could trump occupation law, with all its attendant burdens?
In an awkwardly crafted resolution in May, authored by Washington and London, the Security Council designated the two victorious nations as the "occupying powers". This title carries all the responsibilities, constraints and liabilities that arise under occupation law, codified in the fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 and other instruments. The UN assumed an advisory role but left the legal responsibility squarely with the US and Britain and reminded other nations of their obligations if they deployed troops in Iraq.
In the last half-century no country requiring such radical transformation has been placed under military occupation law instead of a UN mandate or trusteeship. No conquering military power has volunteered formally to embrace occupation law so boldly and with such enormous risk. And never in recent times has an occupation occurred that was so predictable for so long and yet so poorly planned for.
Occupation law was never intended to encourage invasion and occupation for the purpose of transforming a society, however noble that aim. The narrow purpose is to constrain an occupying military power and thus discourage aggression and permanent occupation. The humanitarian needs of the civilian population take priority and usually require the occupying power to act decisively for that purpose.

Yes mister Bush you have an occupation army and an obligation to the people of Iraq. Like it or not Mr Bush they are humans!!!

19. NO, we are NOT hearing those numbers
and comments I've read from doctors in Landstuhl make me suspect those numbers are being concealed as they WOULD NOT be tolerated if widely known.

7. you know, I am real tired of the warped numbers given daily
The number of deaths from the start of this whole Quagmire, including the build up to the invasion should be given and it is over 200!! They should report total wounded also. From "accidents" or whatever each and every death counts to each family and friend. I won't hold my breath waiting for the tv whores to do it though.

8. I've got 112
since 01 may, I've just booted so, this is the first report I've read. CBS did a report yesterday that had one wounded but looking at the truck I don't see how anyone came out alive.
My count since this whole mess began tallies to 279 dead and an unknown number of wounded certainly in the thousands. It's going to get awfully hard to hide the bodies coming back and the military funerals taking place daily accross the country.

12. Iraq Attacks Kill 2 More GIs - CBS
A U.S. soldier was killed Thursday when his armored personnel carrier ran over a land mine on the dangerous road from central Baghdad to the city's airport, the military reported.

The mine exploded beneath a M113 armored personnel carrier, killing the soldier and wounding three others.

It was the second death reported by the military Thursday, a soldier was killed in a small-arms fire attack northeast of Baghdad late Wednesday night. Two others were wounded. The U.S. Central Command said the soldiers were from the 4th Infantry Division.

Also looks like it was blown off the road over a guardrail. Must have been one hell of a mine.

Only 1 death--hard to believe.

14. I dont get it
These soldiers may have to keep their mouths shut while there, but they WILL speak out when they get home and some become civilians...I have a friend that was in Gulf War I, and he felt disgust when this admin. came into power. He had been out of the military for some time when I met him. He told me stories that were just gruesome. His second daughter was born a year after he got back. She was deformed and has slight mental retardation. Guess who/what he blames? bushI and depleted uranium. Here we go again...

Nothing can describe the look on his face when BushII was selected. First thing he predicted was another war there.

Gulf War Vets is eye-opening to read, esp. the Bulletin board. Many perspectives there.

21. My Wife Said It All...
We were watching PBS Newshour Tuesday night. At the end, as they've done since the invasion began, they silently showed pictures of the 'newly' dead American soldiers. When the credits started I turned to her and saw tears streaming down her face. She whispered, "that bastard".
