DOW JONES NEWSWIRESTORONTO -(Dow Jones)- The Group of Eight condemnation of North Korea over the sinking of a South Korean ship is a step toward potential action by the U.N. Security Council, senior U.S. officials said Saturday.
The U.S. will continue to work toward an "appropriate" response against North Korea on the attack, which left 46 South Korean sailors dead, an official told reporters following the G-8 summit.
The joint G-8 statement endorsing an international report holding North Korea responsible for the attack provides "strong momentum which we want to build on in New York," the official said.
The U.S. has been pushing for a U.N. Security Council censure of North Korea over the incident, but the proposal has faced opposition by G-8 member Russia as well as China.
