Striptease on Australia's Uluru angers Aborigines
Edited on Sun Jun-27-10 03:11 AM by demoleft
Source: afp

AFP - A woman who performed a striptease on top of Australia's giant red rock Uluru on Sunday prompted a renewed call for people to be banned from climbing the important indigenous site, a report said.

Alizee Sery, 25, stripped down to a white bikini after climbing the central Australian monolith, formerly known as Ayers Rock, in what she described as a tribute to Aboriginal culture.

"I am aware that Uluru is sacred in their culture. My project is a tribute to the greatness of the Rock," she told the Sunday Territorian.

"What we need to remember is that traditionally, the Aboriginal people were living naked. So stripping down was a return to what it was like."

or St Peter's Basilica.

3. Culture FAIL.
Disrobing on Uluru is one thing.

Doing it with western dance moves as if they were in a techno-pounding club, not so much.

4. Her "respectful" "tribute to aboriginal culture" slid right down the stripper pole
She might have sounded halfway credible if the evidence didn't boomerang on her. A pretty lame try at 'spin' to justify the unjustifiable...

7. That was classy AND entertaining
It demonstrated athleticism and skill, too. Not the traditional use of the pole, though some strippers are dancers and are also creative in its use.

There's a time and a place for everything. Our friend's mistake at Uluru was not being mindful of that, and of the local culture...

6. what an insensivite b****. We were in Uluru in 1995, and were told that the aborigines

considered it a "sacred place".......it was the tour guide's way of telling us to stay off it, I guess.

My husband and I decided not to climb Uluru, and I watched as Japanese tourists, scrambling up with their children, and packages and food, went up, even though they had heard the same thing.

The aborigines really DON'T WANT anyone walking up there! Damnit.

16. Funny you should mention that. Back in 2003 my hubby and daughter and I went to
Sedona Arizona over xmas vacation. We went to Bell Rock (supposed to be a vortex). There were signs all over saying "please stay on trail" as we were coming back, a bus load of Japanese tourist were stomping though the cactus and all the flora and fauna going up to the rock. It upset me immensely.

38. I think you need to consider the treatment of Aboriginals in Australian society
They have been treated horribly. They weren't even considered human until the 60's. They have been on that land for an insanely long time, and treated even worse than our Native Americans. Give them some respect, including banning climbers from Uluru.

The US built a national monument on Lakota lands, and has national parks on Native land.

Should we ban climbing on Native American lands too?

22. In the sixties...
this sort of thing was called "free expression". In America, it took the form of shitting all over traditional American values (not an entirely bad thing). Just the same, those who were offended were ignored or ridiculed.

37. They just need to ban people from walking on the monolith
It's time to give the Aboriginals some respect.

I read in "A Sunburned Country" that, within my lifetime, they weren't even considered HUMANS, but categorized with flora and fauna. We desecrated the Black Hills, and they desecrated Uluru.
