Workers in the mailroom of a downtown Atlanta federal building found what appeared to be a hand grenade while inspecting packages Tuesday.

Atlanta police spokesman officer Otis Redmond announced just after noon that a hand grenade reportedly was found, initially saying it was three blocks north of the actual location, the Peachtree Summit Federal Building at 401 West Peachtree St.

Redmond later explained how the mailroom workers spotted the suspicious package while X-raying packages in what is a routine procedure there.

Members of the Atlanta police bomb squad were suiting up to examine it as authorities closed some surrounding streets.

Workers evacuated the building, which houses federal agencies including the Internal Revenue Service and Social Security.
