Arizona police officer challenges migrant law

Arizona (Reuters) - Tucson police officer Martin Escobar has worked to build relationships of trust in the working class Mexican-American neighborhood he patrols.

U.S. | Mexico

But after Arizona passed a state law in April cracking down on illegal immigrants, some residents stopped coming forward to report crimes like robberies and domestic violence, for fear of being arrested.

"Ask any officer ... You would not believe how many incidents go unreported ... even though the law has not gone into effect," said Escobar, 45, who has worked as a police officer in the city for 15 years.

The Arizona law requires state and local police, after making lawful contact, to determine the immigration status of any person they suspect is in the country illegally.

Escobar is one of two police officers in the desert state who have filed lawsuits in federal court to challenge the law, which takes effect on July 29.

7. This law puts cops in a no winner. They can be sued for not enforcing this law
and they can be sued for racial profiling.

This has to be the most stupid pos ever.

8. Up here, at least, I've found most of our cops are like this one.
Granted, our illegals population is probably lower than anywhere else - who'd put up with 40 below on $7 and hour and lousy housing?

But our State Troopers are some of the best nationwide, and they DON'T like the way this is going. I was talking to a friend on the force not long ago - Alaska is so RW that it wouldn't be unusual if our laws also went this way - and he indicated that troopers wouldn't enforce it. At all.

No, we are definitely not a "sanctuary" state, but our cops don't believe in being unfair to anyone.

Thank goddess.

We get to ride all year here in CA. But I digress, this is bad law created by bad lawmakers.

11. Sweetie, we get 4 months max, and that includes
riding in a little snow, but the road isn't icy....yet.

Spring includes getting the bike out - after the ice is off the road, but not after the snow is gone. We ride if there's no ice.

Bad law, RW repuke law, teabaggers - we have a BUNCH of them here (even a newly started "militia").

I keep hoping Alaskan common sense (sorry about Sarah) will prevail.

I could only imagine riding with snow all around. I guess I can travel several hundred miles north but I don't.

Hey, this is a blue state and we got plenty of RW's out here. A militia probably won't go over too well though.

I don't blame Alaska for Palin - just grandpa McCain. In fact, she's the best thing to ever happen to the Dems. What were the results of the 2008 election again? Oh yeah, 365 to 173!

14. And she keeps inserting those red high heels into mouth.....
They are abberations, really, her, Todd and their "git". Alaskans are pretty laid back politically, or were until the pipeline hit.

We're still a "red" state and will be until the oil companies quit paying our politicians. Even Begich, (D), is suspect..........

We were a D state until the oil companies arrived....

I keep hope and change alive in my heart. There are a lot of us doing so, and will keep on keeping on.
