Sarah Palin aide Fred Malek helped former President Richard Nixon dump Jews from government
Source: NY Daily News

A top adviser to GOP star Sarah Palin was once dispatched by ex-President Richard Nixon to sweep Jews out of government service, newly released tapes show.

Nixon aide Fred Malek's role as what Democrats call a "Jew counter" for the disgraced President was already well known, and he has spent decades apologizing for activities that later cost him a Republican National Committee job in the 1980s. But he remains a prominent GOP powerbroker.

"The government is full of Jews," Nixon griped to chief aide H.R. Haldeman in a July 1971 Oval Office recording released by the University of Virginia's Miller Center on Thursday. "Most Jews are disloyal."

The Republican President, who resigned amid the Watergate scandal in 1974, said he wanted Malek in charge of cleaning Jews out of "any sensitive areas."

"We've got to get a man in charge who is not Jewish to control the Jewish - do you understand?" Nixon said.

1. Talk about ironic . . . . Jews used to say Israel's "best friend" was Nixon.

BLS controversy

In 1971, Richard Nixon became convinced the Bureau of Labor Statistics had come under the control of Democratic rivals and what Nixon termed a "Jewish cabal." He instructed aides Charles Colson and H. R. Haldeman to identify a list of Democrats and "important Jewish officials" at the agency.<10>

Malek provided the data on Democrats after a check of voter registration rolls, but balked at fulfilling the rest of Nixon's query. "I refused four times. The fifth time he came back and gave me a direct order through Haldeman, so I gave him a number. I regret my compliance. It was a mistake."<11> Two months after he sent the list, two of the officials on it were reassigned to "less visible jobs" within the Labor Dept.<12> Slate columnist Timothy Noah, however, asserts that a September 8, 1971 memo from Malek to Haldeman appears to contradict Malek's assertions of limited involvement, in which Malek states he has recommended to the Secretary of Labor "fairly drastic moves" including the "compromise" reassignment of three officials.<10>

Seymour D. Reich, chairman of Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations during the 1990s, said "Malek made a mistake 18 years ago when he agreed to a regrettable request by President Nixon." But he added, Malek "has taken pains to assure the Jewish community that he realizes his error and that he intended no harm. I believe he is sincere."<13>

P.S. One more reason not to like Malek: deputy director of Nixon's re-election campaign (CREEP).

4. Uh, yeah, I used to hear Jews say that all the time.
Every time I visited my family: "Israel's best friend is Nixon." It's practically all I heard them say, as a matter of fact.

(Most Jews were and are Democrats and hated Nixon back in the day. That is, the ones who were actually human beings instead of components of the uniform entity known as "Jews" who "used to say ....")

8. It's a mistake to confuse Jews with Israel. There isn't a unanimous opinion about Zionism.
BTW, welcome to DU.

12. Which Jews are you talking about?
My parents, along with the rest of our neighborhood, had a fucking party when he resigned. I've seen more disinformation on this site this week than in the 8 years I've been here.

19. My stepdad was a deep, red-hating conservative.
Not sure if he was that way before some stuff he'd ordered was confiscated by Castro, but the VietNam years were hell at our dinner table.

About 48 hours before Nixon resigned, he admitted that Nixon might have committed some crimes. It took that long.

So yeah, there were Jews who approved of Nixon. Not by the end, though. In my house.

15. Israel is a useful, far away symbol
American Jews are uncomfortably close and disturbing.

That's the dichotomous mindset of the modern conservative.
